Think of all the build up for this fight. Think of all the casual fans that would have become more interested in boxing if this was an exciting fight. Think of all the people who paid thousands and thousands of dollars expecting to see a great fight. With a disappointing fight like this which was labeled the fight of the century, boxing can not expect to gain more fans. This fight was a huge loss to boxing. Neither fighter showed up to fight. No excuses, I'm eating my crow, but my loss is more that it was such a disappointing show. I'm a Pac fan but this was more disappointing than Pac getting ktfo6. Not so much that he lost, but this fight didn't do boxing any good, but instead hurt the sport!
The real boxing fans will always stay, but the 'new' boxing fans will walk away. The fight was dull as expected. This fight was hyped too much in my view. A fight between two of the best, is not always the best fight. Matthysse vs Provodnikov last month was a much better fight to watch, because styles make fighhts.
Most people that follow the sport knew how this would turn out. I was impressed with Floyd's ability to nullify Pac. Pac caught him a few times but it was always going to be "a punchers chance" 5-6 years ago? Who knows. This is definitely not the end of boxing. The end of "fights of the century" for sure.
true, hardcore boxing fans may always be boxing fans, but boxing need fans otherwise boxing will go down the drain. Boxers need to get paid, trainers, and all staff. If this will go on, no one will want to fight for nothing. Money comes from fans.
Canelo next week. GGG on the 16th. May 22nd in Moscow, DeGale v Dirrell on the 23rd, 2 good fights on the Matchroom card on the on the 30th. I think we will manage to carry on:rofl
Real boxing fans will watch those fights, but are real boxing fans enough to sustain the needs of the boxers?
This has been brought up for years.. Boxing may be a niche sport but it will survive. Every time a major fight happens it's always a disappointment. Yet, the sport lives on. Boxing is in a way better place than it was 10 years ago.
From what I have seen from non boxing fans, this fight did not bring any new fans in and actually turned a lot of them away from boxing.
Boxing is fine. In fact, Boxing is THRIVING. Reception on the internet is what you see, and reception on the internet is an amazing minority despite what it feels like.
It's was always gonna struggle after Floyd and Manny leave. Who is going to be the face of boxing in 1 year? Canelo?
I paid for the fight and it was interesting, a great boxing clinic by Mayweather as it answered questions we all had. However, the under card was terrible.
