Opinions aside (Mayweather dominated, Pacquiao stunk the place out), the fight was a let down to the casual fans. Floyd is too good and Pacquiao was exposed and very ineffective. PPV used to be for the sports biggest stars, boxings premier champions. Now its for every semi-decent fight. PBC will bring boxing to the mainstream audience again, for free. This is great news, as advertising revenue will fund good purses for fighter - and fans will get what they want (blood). Exciting fights do happen often in boxing, fights that casual fans will enjoy. And now these fights will be broadcast to the public. This means that a lot of average fighters (Broner et all) will most likely lose their PPV status and there will be a huge natural reshuffle in the sport. Give it time and the truly great exciting fighters will rise to the surface as the new PPV fighters. Fighters the fans have followed on TV and that have proven themselves. PPV will be for the great fighters to fight each other on again. Not just for every fight by the sports current 'stars'. I think the current format of PPV fighters is now dated, and at a big risk with internet piracy. Mayweather has become the undisputed champion at this current format, and PBC has come at a great time with him now retiring after one more PPV. People are saying boxing is dead, but it will never die. Exciting match-ups are always intriguing, but its time for a new era. Floyd is a top 10 ATG when he retires, and he is the last great of the PPV era. Now fighters will flock to mainstream tv boxing broadcasts, and boxing will only get better for it.
I hope he does reinvent boxing, he has the talent signed to do it. I've knocked haymon before like im sure most have, but if we keep getting Thurman - Guerrero, Lee - Quillin etc. on TV for free then it's a great thing for the sport
Unless the fights end up on some obscure cable channel. The Major Networks is where they should all be. Khan/Algieri on Spike?
Is it though? No one gives a **** about Lee-Quillen, or Wilder-Cunningham or whatever. People want to see the best fight the best, and as long as there is this Cold War going on that will never happen. The real fights to be made are GGG-Quillen/Cotto, Klitschko-Wilder, Stevenson-Kovalev and so on, but as long as we're in this boxng apartheid it will never happen
Your hanging onto the old era. PPV is dead. People want exciting fights, not just fighters with a name anymore.
Agreed but its a step forward. Last year if you wanted Garcia - Peterson, Lee - Quillin, Thurman - Guerrero, etc. it was $15 a month, now it isn't that can't be a bad thing right? And it could force other promotions/networks to put on better fights to compete
Casual fans love blood and ko's. Just get some hard hitting prospects, put them up against tomato cans, make sure the matches are hyped and well viewed, and call it a day
