Floyd Mayweather Jr. will enter 49th contest (last of SHO contract) w/o any belts?

There is precedence to this. When you are THE champion trinket belts or not it doesn't matter. It has already happened several times. Wlad would still have The Ring belt which despite its faults is the only one that still matters.

That has never been a real title. If "trinket belts" don't matter then neither do other parts of boxing tradition such as round length, glove size regulations.

So what you're saying is that if you're THE CHAMPION, no rules apply to you and you can remove the padding from your gloves and load plaster in your wraps and land hits after the bell sounds, because YOU'RE THE CHAMP.

No, there's a way things are done and that should be respected by champions even more so than by anyone else, to set an example. Precedent schmecedent, anybody that doesn't hold a belt and insists on walking out 2nd is a ****. (looking at you, Miguel Cotto..)

    :lol::lol::lol:

Who is talking about removing padding and changing rounds etc? :huh

You have seen a lot of fights. I am certain you are aware of one that is an example of what you are saying should not happen. Wlad could throw all his belts in a trash can tomorrow and it would not change one thing about his status and the same goes with Floyd and he knows that. The belts don't matter. Ask Mike Spinks about that.

This is very, very likely. Before retiring, he may attempt to add legitimacy to the concept of 'PBC Champion' as a favor to Haymon. Relinquishing belts from the other sanctioning bodies is the first step.

I doubt this will work, but time will tell if it even happens.

Of course it has been done. It shouldn't have been.

The belt holder walking out 2nd is part of the sport's tradition. More respect ought to be given to that tradition than to any individual boxer's ego, whether or not they are "recognized as the champ" by any cross-section of fans or even by acclamation.

What about Las Vegas Ring announcer who more often than not announced the champion first and the challenger second? (Norton-Holmes, Holmes-Berbick, Holmes ****ey, etc)

Was that bad too? It didn't matter everyone knew who was the champion and who was the challenger.

It should be done the correct way, for propriety and out of respect.

    That is an interesting read!

Vacating the belts at both weights does make you wonder if he is planning a jump. :think (if he actually does so)

Now that I do agree with you on. One more crazy scenario Wlad beats Wilder and unifies all the belts. He drops them all the next day. Povetkin picks up the vacant WBC belt. Wlad-Povetkin II happens. So you are telling me Povetkin should walk out 2nd even though Wlad already destroyed him and is THE champion? :huh

    :think

I could see that happening he clearly hates Oscar and HBO. That would freeze both of them out.

Yep and he is very smart. I would not be shocked if he already has this planned out. The WBC loves him and is not going to strip Cotto if he beats Geale and decides to fight Floyd they love the money they will make from that fight. Very shrewd move which is why I think you are 100% correct.......

Yes. If walking out 2nd is so important to him, don't bother dropping the belts. :conf
