Big George Foreman Vs Johnny Nelson

Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by WelcomePaladin2, May 4, 2015.

  1. Prime for prime... Who wins in this mythical match up between two long reigning world champs?

I've went back & forth, back & forth on this one but I think George wins a UD, possibly SD, with the score most likely being 116-112 in favour of george. (12 round format)

    Thoughts?

Are we talking of the same Johnny Nelson that not only lost to lanky Henry Akinwande, but also lost to Adilson Rodrigues, not once, but twice iirc back to back.

  5. Yes but Mike Tyson also lost to Danny Williams & Kevin McBride. I'm talking Prime Nelson.

Bearing in mind. I still believe George wins 7 times out of 10 but wouldnt be surprised if Johnny got the nod or a late stoppage.

  6. Nelson Reflexes would be too quick for Big George's powerful, yet slow, punches.

Tyson was well past his best when he tackled these guys. I think it would be fair to say that JN would, or should have been at his best by this time. To answer your question, Foreman would be far too much for Nelson, unless he ran all night, in which case GF would get an easy UD. A likely scene would be GF trapping JN in a corner early and stopping him.

Foreman is top 5 all time. Unequaled physical strength and punching power. A true human force of nature in the ring. The only fighters I bet to beat him are very quick boxers who can avoid danger and come on later in the fight. The list is a small one.... Ali, Holmes and perhaps Tunney.

You need to know what you are talking about. Prime Ali would not lay on the ropes. An older slower Ali did lay on the ropes periodically during their bout in 1974.....not the entire fight. Ali out punched and outfoxed George that night. George retired in 1977 about the time Holmes was starting to bloom. Tunney was as great a pure boxer we have ever had as champion and he had the skills to beat any puncher. Add Louis to the list since he also had the boxing skill to out box and then ko big George. All this is no slight to George who I rate very highly all time. In my book he is top 5 all time but you need to be fair in judging his skills as well as *****s in his armor.

The OP must be talking about a prime Nelson v the almost 50 year old Foreman, mustn't he?

In that case Nelson would stink the place out by doing everything possible NOT to get involved, and hopefully either the ref DQ's him for not fighting, or the judges award George a shut out UD.

Prime Foreman? Don't be so fuking stupid. Nelson wouldn't even share the same town as Foreman, never mind the same ring.

Big George wins by KO 1. Johny Nelson struggled with steroid cheat Guillermo Jones and got a draw, he doesn't belong in the same ring with Foreman.

  12. Just a wee bump. After ****ysing tapes & a bit more research on the history of boxing, I have made a change in my prediction.

I think Nelsons speed & reflexes would help edge him a UD or SD in a 12 rounder. However, foreman would drop him in the later rounds if it was a 15 rounder.

Prime George would put Nelson in the hospital. Even old George stops prime Nelson.

Foreman wins.. But that doesn't mean he goes out there and scores an easy KO early. Nelson was only stopped once in some 60 fights and was a long time cruiser champion. He was significantly smaller than George but also slick, durable and tricky at times. The older version of Geroge Foreman ( If that's the one we're talking about ) struggled against guys like these. My guess is that he hammers out a decision or somehow manages to stop Nelson late. But its not out of the question that Johnny could linger around a while and even steal a few rounds away from him.
