Tyson was too effective for his own good, so when he met some resistance he was almost surprised, especially later in his career. If you watch his earlier fights you will see he was less easily discouraged though. I liked the Tucker fight, Tucker caught him early with an uppercut but Mike didn't blink, he was also getting out boxed at times but he had the discipline to realise all he had to do was keep fighting and he would find success, that mindset was gone later. He also took some massive bombs against Ruddock but didn't let that discourage him. He was a great fighter but his later career nearly destroyed his legacy. Thing is with Tyson, he has that 3 years perfection, people are fascinated by it, many believe during that period he was unbeatable. Right or wrong, many people believe it. The Douglas loss is seen as an aberration, which may not necessarily be fact. This must really get to guys like Holyfield and Lewis lol. The common fan will give Mike a free pass after his prime and just see the monster he was and assume he would easily beat Holy and Lewis at his best. You got to give him credit for creating that hype, even if it is a myth.

His loss of drive and 3 plus years in Prison and bad Career choices resulted in him squandering all his talent.

He rates above Dempsey, Marciano and Frazier as a champioship heavyweight. If that isn't good enough for you... so be it.

the post-prison career he had was more hype. before that he unified the heavyweight title easily and was regarded as the #1 lb for lb fighter. rare for a heavyweight to achieve that. he's overrated and underrated at the same time. his problem historically is that he never beat a great heavyweight close to their prime. he's still a top 20 heavyweight if i had to rank i guess.

Exactly...hype jobs arent pound for pound the best fighter..Tyson is the tale of two fighters...great pre prison ..horrible post...carried the heavyweight scene on his back..unified the title..cleaned out the division top to bottom...hype jobs dont do that...he wasnt the only ATG with a short prime and thats what he should be judged on when he was at his best...and...at his best prob the most physically gifted fighter to ever step in the ring..also..not many heavyweights beat other great heavyweights..its rare for that to happen...if anything holyfield shouldve been his Frazier had Tyson avoided prison and kept his head on straight..

He never had the will to win, the heart of an ATG as such you can't rate him above those who have achieved ATG status.

He lost to Buster Douglas badly. He took a beating.

Even to this day people cannot accept that loss. They just cannot accept it. They have a hundred explanations and excuses and alibis.

He was beaten up and knocked out, schooled for much of the fight. From start to finish, mostly.

To be fair, he scored a good KD on his way to defeat, proof of his legitimate punching power. But other than that, he was thoroughly outboxed and outfought.

Douglas was a decent heavyweight, a good solid professional, a routine contender. Nothing more.
If Tyson was half as good as his hype, he'd beat Douglas on his worse night.

Exactly, you are spot on. Tyson came into the Douglas fight in great condition, it's there for all to see. He was not carrying fat, he looked as fit as ever. Tyson fanatics can't handle the fact that an average contender gave him the beating of a lifetime.

An undeniable ATG fighter with undeniable great skills.... but also an undeniable hype job even during his early career.

Tyson was the "next bing thing" for the HW division during the late 80s, and sure he had great achievements, no doubt on that. But things were absolutely blown out of proportion by the hype machine.

Case in point: Tyson's victory over Spinks. I can't understand why it is supposed to be one of Tyson's marquee wins. Defeating a mediocre, scared opponent like Spinks was that night should not be considered a high point in your resume.

But event to this day the hype machine try to sell us Tyson vs Spinks like "Mike's ultimate victory"

People will say "it's only one fight" but when you're rating against the ATGs every fight IN THEIR PRIMES counts.
Every fighter has bad nights, even "in prime".
But the true elite greats can beat the Douglas-level opponents on a bad night in their prime.
It was a championship fight, ffs, a 23-year-old champ defending the title.

It wasn't a particularly competitive fight.
    It was a sustained beating.

Don't get me wrong, I'd still rate Tyson above Douglas, because he had some decent and impressive KO wins and a decent little run .... but you can't rate him with the elite heavyweight ATGs, or with the true p4p greats of his own era.

Imagine a prime Hagler gettin the sh!t beat out of him by Sibson.
Impossible because Hagler was actually as good as they said he was.
With Tyson, he just was not !
    It's irrefutable.

Except for the fact that you can go back and find quotes from multiple people in his training camp who said he wasn't in shape and along with the fact of him getting dropped in sparring, stop with that fanatic idiocy, every fighter has fans that defend them but somehow its wrong if Tyson has fans? that hate makes everything else you say irrelevant..A hype job doesn't unify the titles and get rated pound for pound ..a hype job would be someone like Michael Grant..

Except I can see for my own eyes that he was in shape, I don't listen to bull**** excuses that come out after he got the living daylight kicked out of him.
