https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=96xY0eThSGs Great footage. 1. Gans clearly took a dive. The first knockdowns gans clearly ducked under mcgoverns left hook and pretended it landed 2. These guys sure are sloppy. Low hands , wide punches, telegraphed punches, no combinations. A 135lb Mayweather would have carved these two up
1 - I disagree that Gans looks sloppy. Before he gets hurt he absolutely is not throwing "wide punches telegraphed punches" and quite clearly throws combinations. 2 - I think he took a dive yeah but I'm not sure why. It could have been gambling it could have been because he just didn't like what he was getting. He did quit once before with a bad cut.
It's an entertaining "fake", I'll give it that. And I guess these guys needed money. The fakes we get now though .... :smoke
1 ) I recall McGovern landed a shot to the ear / back of the head region, Gans knees wobble then he falls. That is the first knock down. McGovern was a fast starting KO artists. He hit Gans hard a few times before it was stopped. 2 ) Why go down as much as he did in a fixed fight? 3 ) I think Gans had some trouble with pressure fighters like McGovern. 4 ) Many of those yelling fix were better on Gans, or disappointed with his performance 5 ) If it was a fix, there was far more action in it that most of the fights these days!
It was fixed. Even the referee, George Siler, said it looked completely fake. Black gamblers coming in from Baltimore to bet big on McGovern. Illinois banned boxing largely because of this fake fight.
It is a shame that this is the film that we have to rely on for interpreting McGovern's style really!
Siler was rather fond of Gans, and had some questionable moments in other key fights. Which gamblers from Baltimore bet on McGovern and how much did they wager? There too much alleged stuff in boxing. Names would be nice.
You cannot determine how good these men were looking at this very old silient era film. Those that watched both men live and in person rated both very highly. Looks to me that Gans was caught early with s hard punch he did not recover from. Why go down so many times if the fight was fixed?
Jesus, some idiots are pathetic. The people who WANT to believe this wasnt a fix are so agenda driven (by the pigmentation of McGovern's skin) that they will ignore a fighter going down from punches he avoids. Nevermind that he took punches from bigger fighters and much bigger punchers than Terry McGovern ever dreamed of being.
I have no such agenda. I have watched the bout countless times. It appears to me he was clipped early with one huge punch so much so that what appear as lighter blows put him down over and over. Again I don't see the reason to go into a fixed bout and then go down over and over again. If it's all fake why fake many knockdowns? Fake one or maybe two at most then Get out of there.
Just watched it again. I see nothing that tells me this was a fix or a dive. Gans gets hit with a right hand to the temple that drops him initially. and then goes down again and again as McGovern is on top of him as he rises. If faked why fake it in this manner?
