Mendoza names Tiger Jack Fox as one of the black contenders Louis did not fight. Should Louis have defended against Fox?

    Foxs resume during Louis's reign

    1937
    Fox beats Steve Dudas
    Fox beats assorted 3rd raters.

Fox loses to 170lbs Al Gainer.
    1938
Fox's banner year he beats Jersey Joe Walcott and Jack Trammel, wins NY Lhvy title against Gainer.
    1938
Louis defends against Natie Mann ko3
Mann had recently beaten Godoy,Pastor,Roper and Barlund.

    Harry Thomas ko5
A case can be made for Fox substituting for Thomas imo.

    Max Schmeling ko1
    Schmeling was unfinished business.
    1939
Fox is stopped by Melio Bettina in 9rds
Fox loses to Dave Clark. Clark kod in previous fight by Lesnevich in1 rd
    Fox beats assorted ham &eggers
    1940
Fox loses to Al Delaney, beats a collection of nobodies.
    1941-1944 INACTIVE
    1945
Split dec win over Ted Lowry
Stopped by Bobby Zander 4-0-0 in 7rds
    1946
    Beaten by Walter Hafer11-5-1
    1947
Loses to Jerry McSwain 13-1-1 ko'd in 6rds
    1948

    Loses to Freddie Beshore.

Anyone think he should have gotten a title shot, if so when?

Joe Louis did fight Tiger Jack Fox in a 4 round exhibition match.

    https://news.google.com/newspapers?...AIBAJ&sjid=iPUDAAAAIBAJ&pg=7360,2399713&hl=en

The fight was expected to attract the largest crowd in Spokane history, over 10,000.

    https://news.google.com/newspapers?...AIBAJ&sjid=kXcDAAAAIBAJ&pg=4824,5515108&hl=en

Ultimately though, it seems that the crowd disappointed a little, with only just over 7000 people attending to watch Louis, who strangely must have sparred both tiger jack fox and bill peterson on the one night.

    https://news.google.com/newspapers?...AIBAJ&sjid=4f8DAAAAIBAJ&pg=4200,5179845&hl=en

It does seem from another news report i read that Louis went four rounds total 2 against each. It say in the headline that louis Easy, which tends to suggest that he outclassed Fox, but it was only an exhibition of course. Still, Nino Valdes and Elmer Ray are two guys who can testify to the power of Joe Louis in exhibitions.

Fox was definitely thought highly of. At one stage they considered him the policeman for Joe Louis!

Tiger Fox was an excellent fighter. I believe Walcott called him the best fighter he ever faced. That being said he really was not a hwt and for that reason alone was not deserving of a title shot.

There are quite a few black fighters that were better than some of the white fighters Louis gave title shots too. It's a fact.

Fox won 139 fights, 83 of which came by KO. He is in the hall of fame. Any hall of fame member is worthy of a title shot in my opinion.

From 1938-1944 ( Joe Louis championship years ), Fox fought 45 times, losing just four times with 1 TKO loss.

    He's worthy for sure.

Why did Louis avoid him? He was black but there could be other reasons why he never fought Joe Louis. Fox fought out of a crouch. This is noteworthy since fighters who fought out of a crouch gave Louis some trouble. In addition he had the type of defense that made guys miss.

Would Louis have adjusted quickly? We'll never know.

Now McVey, with the data presented do you think he should have gotten a title shot? I have a hunch you might say yes. Time will tell.

Fox was a great fighter but Louis also wanted to give the legend a good payday...Fox was well liked

Fox had a 75" reach, and was about 2 inches shorter than Louis, who had a 76" reach.

Fox was the heavyweight champion from the state of Indiana, and a black heavyweight champion. Maybe these belts didn't have a lot of prestige at the time, yet he did win them. Fox was a heavyweight for sure.

Louis fought many title opponents under 200 pounds.

How about you answer my question which year should he have gotten a title shot?
    Louis's" championship years were 1938-1944? "
That's strange I thought he won the title from Braddock on June 22nd 1937and retired on March the 1st 1949:huh
Fox did not fight at all from1941 -1944!

I read he was quite a showman as well, and successfully used "the crab " like defense which Paulino Uzcudun also used. I'd love to see it!

Is there any film on Fox? Maybe Klompton knows.

False. Fox had 3 fights in 1941, and 5 fights in 1944. Fox with out a doubt had more fights than were recorded.

I was showing how good Fox was from 1938-1944, while Louis was champion. We all know when Louis won the title.

1938 would have been a fine year for a title shot for Fox.

You did not answer my question. Do you think Fox should have gotten a title shot from Louis or not?

Fox won 59 fights during Louis's reign lost 9 and was stopped several times during that period His two best wins are over a22-5-2 Walcott and Jack Tramell both in1938 .
Neither Walcott or Tramell were rated and neither was Fox, after he beat them Fox was promptly stopped by Light heavyweight Melio Bettina some months later.
Fox beat a host of 3rd raters and was a light heavyweight. Answer NO!

Six of Fox's nine losses happened from 1945-1950 when he was on the slide.

Louis did not fight in 1945, and only had 4 more title defenses, then he lost to Charles.

Okay, I get it. You don't think a hall of fame fighter with a long and distinguished career was worthy. The board can speak, and has. We'll see who agrees with your opinion.

If you think Fox wasn't better than Harry Thomas ( 1938 title shot ) or Jack Roper ( 1939 ) title shot or Al McCoy ( 1941 title shot ) , I say your 100% wrong, or too stubborn to admit you are wrong.

    Fox was a great fighter?
Who did he beat to achieve this greatness?
Which great heavyweight fighter did he beat to deserve the adjective great? His best two wins are Walcott who was 22-5-2 and had lost his previous fight to Steve Ketchel and Tramell who never beat a great fighter either

I ask, which heavyweight fighter who was great when he fought him did Fox beat?

Being in the HOF means JACK SH*T.

There are more in it than out of it!

Simple question for a simple poster .
Which great heavyweight fighter did Jack Fox beat?

Now do you want to address the other two threads that I made
as a direct result of you stating Leroy Haynes and Larry Gains deserved title shots from Louis?
Or, will you adopt your usual practice and ignore the questions?

Joe Walcott was a great fighter. Fox beat him.

This is a Fox thread, not a Haynes or Gains thread.

I disagree, to make the hall of fame you have to be one of the best in your time. There are various degrees of greatness.

Now, don't you think Fox was a better choice than Thomas, Roper or McCoy? A yes or no will do.

Bottom line: Louis only fought two black men in title fights. There were plenty of black contenders worthy of a title shot. They were not selected. If you think all the white opponents were better, you can say so here.

One of those men kod Fox but only lasted part of one round with Louis.

You need to make up your mind, first of all I'm biased against white heavyweights , now I'm biased against black ones!
    Which is it.?
What I'm actually biased against is agenda driven bull**** from racist ****h*le
