An ATG, what does that even mean?

He's certainly a great fighter and one of the greatest super middleweights of all time. Would he have been great in any era?

Well he was awkward, had an iron chin, elite stamina and elite work rate. Plus he had good power before his injury (anyone else remember him using the ring name "terminator "). He wouldn't beat every great but he would beat his fair share.

I say yes he is an ATG.

Prior to the creation of the super middleweight division, he would have been a good size for a traditional middleweight but a bit small for a light heavy. I think his size, speed, skill and stamina would have given him some tools to work with against some great middles.

but doesn't want to type in

    Willie Pep KO specialist

    or

    Pernell Whitaker KO specialist

    how about

    Floyd Mayweather KO specialist

Your really do wear your imbecility with pride, don't you?

If you could magically put Calzaghe in the ring with real greats like Jones, Spinks, Moore, Bivins, Foster etc then Calzaghe fans would be in for a nasty shock and brutal reality check at how one sided these fights would be.

And if you put any of those you mention in with real great Heavies or Cruisers you would be in for a nasty shock. In fact we know what happened to Jones when he met a Cruiser in Lebedev. We also know what happened to Moore, Spinks, and Foster when they fought great Heavies ( or in Spinks's case a live, peak one )

You do know that Calzaghe ONLY had 2 fights at 175 out of 46 don't you?:roll:

Just a cursory review of all the "experts" who were picking Lacy to ROLL OVER Calzaghe...not just beat him....is a real eye opener. JC was just awesome in completely...thoroughly dominating Lacy...as complete an ownage as I've ever seen....but.....he'll forever be dunped upon because for one, he was a white Brit..and secondly, because of his lack of power, caused by his brittle hands...he'll never be forgiven for that.

I agree with all of that apart from the last part. Mayweather has lacked power for the last 10 years at 147 and above, due to brittle hands, but he is still the highest paid, and " watched " fighter on earth. I think your white Brit observation might be a lot closer tbh.

Many of the people that say he isn't will also have been saying before the Lacy fight that Lacy will batter Joe. Then after the event they still don't have the decency to admit they were wrong. He found a way to win, many are not even aware he had multiple hand fractures so couldn't load up on shots later in career. He fought Hopkins when Hopkins was still a force and schooled Lazy beyond belief. Brilliant fighter, only appreciated by those who have stepped in a ring themselves.

And to emphasize how many people don't have a particularly good insight into boxing. I've seen people ass kiss Carl Froch on here, now come on, could he win a round against Calzaghe realistically?!

Reluctantly I say yes. His main division, 168 lbs., is only 30 yrs old and even at times since then, it has periods where there did not seem to be many quality contenders. But he arguably has the best record of any 168 lb. fighter since the division's inception.

That said, I believe Roy Jones and James Toney were the two best fighters in that division's history.
