Another load of rubbish, funny how you forget to mention that Douglas had been very ill prior to the fight and was on medication when all Tyson did was have a few late nights and bang a few lady boys...

    This.

Unfortunately unless you are a footballer ( soccer player to Americans ) watched by billions globally week in week out, you will not achieve iconic status. However if you are a different athlete with a " bad boy " image, " ordinary " people who probably don't even follow your particular sport will seek out news about you. It is the same in any kind of entertainment. Who cares about the hard working clean as a whistle, actor / musician? It's the drug fuelled, pi sshead that is always getting into fights, or trouble with the law that sells to the public.

I'd say a good example of this would be Lance Armstrong. How many people do you think actually followed, or cared about cycling or him pre bad publicity, compared to the amount who had plenty to say AFTER it was revealed that he, and according to him, most other cyclists were on PED's? And this was a guy that was a dominant winner for how long?

i am pretty sure if he was ill,he would have said it in case he lost and wanted a rematch you fool.if you think alcoholism, heavy drug use and ****ty training do not effect performance, you know nothing of any sports.

James “Buster” Douglas: “Well, I could have easily gone out there and given a lackluster performance, or probably try once or twice and say, Aw, the hell with it. And put a face back on, well my mother just died, I was under a lot. But that was the last thing I would allow to happen. Because my mother was such a very strong woman and I couldn’t go out like that. She raised me to be a really strong man. So, really, like I said, that just intensified my training and my last couple of weeks before the fight. There was no doubt in my mind that I could do it. I felt very confident. It was one of the most confident days going to a fight in my career. I always knew I had the ability, that’s why I did it. So I knew I had the tools to do it. It was just sorting a few things out along the way to becoming champion.”______DOES THIS SOUND LIKE AN UNMOTIVATED ILL MAN?

Buster Douglas trained for the fight and tried to win. It's just not fair. :|

He was obviously not just a hype job (why is this thread so long??) but equally he was obviously over hyped.

Yeah, when you are the best fighter in the world you're obviously not a hype job.
And Tyson was the best in the world for a while. Quite clearly, I'd say.

I started out more skeptical of Tyson than I am now, for the same reasons as many classic fans.

When I started crunching the numbers on his resume, it proved to be deceptively deep, despite his relatively short reign.

I think once you get over the fact that he fell short of expectations, you are left with the resume of a great heavyweight.

All very well if people are interested in fanboy bollox, but why can't any of you explain this?

Mike Tyson 218¼ lbs beat Michael Spinks 212¼ lbs.

Tyson weighed in at 220½ pounds for the Douglas fight.

Don't bother with any of that moronic " fighting fit " garbage because it implies that ordinary people are as fuking stupid as fan boys.

A guy 5' 10" at that weight would blow up like a balloon in a matter of a few weeks, if he didn't train as hard as usual.

Ffs Toney managed to do it from Middleweight.:lol:

Exactly, I dont know what else to say but this..look at his reign regardless of how short it was, after unifying the titles and cleaning out the division, what else could he have done besides fight Holyfield? Alot of ppl use Tyson bashing to show how boxing smart they think they are, if your a real boxing fan you can appreciate how great he was for a small amount of time instead of repeating the same tired cliches..

Agreed. But his prime wasn't so much short in duration but a bit condensed. From Ferguson till Douglas he fit a lot of activity in. Contrast with Marciano who held the title for a mere THREE years. Or Dempsey who elongated his career by fighting second chance guys or focussing on banging starlets (nothing wrong with that)...

Prime Mike was maybe the greatest HW ever, only problem he was little bit small.so there are definetly changes of an upset.

After Mike went with King and split
with his boxing "family" firing Rooney etc..

It was shadow of real Mike Tyson after that.and it's really easy to see it.just look the fights.

Tyson left his combinations, started to look 1punch KO.and defence started to fall apart.no head movement etc.

Also the great footwork and balance was not anymore there.

I don't know how Tyson trained at that point, but all the evidence "declining skills" lead me to believe, that Tyson was not training as hard anymore

There is maybe 3versions of Tyson Gus and Kevin created a monster.Don King started to destroy that monster.and after the prison Tyson was finished.

That's just my opinion.so yes to me in his prime,he was the greatest HW
ever.but overall,of course Tyson didn't do enough to be in top10 alltime HW rankings

Those neverending discussions on Tyson are like an addiction. Just when you think you are cured and free, you fall again in your old vice.

Tyson is the "shoulda, woulda, coulda" of boxing universe.... Enough of that. He is an undeniable ATG, but he is fringe top 10 at the best.

And he was also a monster hype job.
