Marciano often gets underrated. Not necessarily in this forum, but in the general forum and often just in general. He was heavy-handed, underrated defensively, had loads of stamina and heart, and used his awkwardness to his advantage. While I feel he's too small H2H for a lot of the HW greats, he was a terrific fighter and a tough match for just about anyone in his weight range. Spinks (another awkward fighter who also gets underrated a lot) and Marciano would be an interesting matchup. Spinks was an all-timer at LHW, a good but hardly great HW, who achieved an amazing amount in just 32 pro fights. The weight would roughly be the same. Marciano weighing around 185-190, Spinks obviously weighed around the 175 range at LHW and then the low 200s at HW. He doesn't have to train with Mackie Shilstone here to fight a HW. Just don't cut any weight and he's around the same weight as Marciano, with edges in height and range. Two awkward styles, you're unlikely to get something aesthetically beautiful here. Marciano would be pressing the action, while I see Spinks doing a lot of jabbing and movement to keep the fight at his distance and tempo. He's throw in some right hands and other shots in there in addition to the jab, like the way he fought Qawi. In fact, i can see the fight going similar to that one, although I think Marciano has more success than Dwight did. Spinks by UD
Spinks won't beat prime Marciano and it has nothing to do with size or the lack of it. Rocky was a far greater technical fighter than you and most others give him credit far. He was cute in the ring and not easy to hit always slipping blocking rolling ducking. Both Moore and Walcott found out Rovky was not the open target they thought he was.
Not as heavy handed as someone like spinks, but still a hard hitter for his time! I mean we all saw what he did to mr Walcott
This is a very interesting fight, I never even thought about this one. Perhaps Rocky would break Spinks down but I dunno I picture Spinks winning this one. Spinks was a master boxer and was very cagey, I don`t see Marciano being fast enough to impose his strength on Spinks out of the gate like Tyson did. Once Spinks settles in I see him using his movement to keep Marciano off balance and to tag him with combinations and get out. Wouldn`t surprise me to see Spinks put Marciano on the deck its not even out of the question for him to knock the Rock out. Of course Marciano with his power to go along with relentless pressure and determination would be dangerous the entire fight and could possibly break Spinks down.
What in the HELL is being said?????? Spinks hit nowhere NEAR as hard as Marciano! Is this real life?????
Prime Ali doubted he could beat Marciano or at least beat him every time. Spinks was a great fighter but he won't beat Rocky.
Probably Marciano.. But its not as much of a forgone conclusion for me as it used to be. Assuming they would be at their best I'd choose the Spinks who beat Holmes in 1985. Not the one who fought Tyson in 1988.. Some of Marciano's toughest fights came against past prime former light heavy's and Spinks at 29 years old, 6'2", 205 lbs was bigger and had more left in the tank than some of them.. He was also capable of going fifteen rounds and was awkward as hell.. The man had never been stopped nor even Floored until he met a peaking Tyson in '88, by which point the Jinx was on the way out.
Spinks was too tall, cagey and explosive for Marciano. He had a ramrod jab that could keep the smaller fighter at bay and if Rocky did his usual crouching routine, Spinks could catch him with his uppercuts. Spinks would either stop him on cuts or stop him outright. I can't see Rocky catching him with any significant punches. He would pay a heavy price anytime he got that close. If Spinks was cautious, he would win a lopsided decision. If he really opened up, a stoppage inside 10.
Without "modern" training techniques Spinks never would have made 200lb. Moving up to face Holmes was initially seen as a one fight deal. Something Spinks never would ordinarily considered. He did not want Tucker and he did not really want Tyson. Deep down Spinks never did consider himself a heavyweight. His heart was not in it. Naturally Marciano would be far too much for Spinks.
So a 5'7 swarmer can take Spinks 15 grueling rounds and land several hard punches, but the taller, harder hitting, more skilled, stronger Marciano can't?
