Today it was confirmed that Carl Froch was stripped of his title for failure to defend the belt within 12 months. I agree with this as the belts need to stay active in order to create good fights, however my issue with this is, why wasn't Ward stripped multiple times in the last 3-4 years. They have had many occasions in which they could have stripped Ward as he actually had longer breaks from boxing without defending his belt. Its now been 18 months since he fought Edwin Rodriquez and he hasn't been stripped of his 'super' belt. The double standards are a joke with the belts now. First of all the amount of belts are ridiculous and means that a fighter that really isn't good enough wins one, but the main issue is the contradictions with the defending/ lack of defing from some champions. A couple of examples for you; McDonnell was stripped of his IBF for not defending it within 90 days, or failure to organise a fight within that time, when he had an injury. However we have Lamont Petersen who is not only a drug cheat but also fights outside the weight limit so he doesn't have to fight for his title, yet still manages to keep the belt. Then you obviously have the Ward and Froch situation where both should be stripped, however the one who is the lesser culprit gets stripped. There are probably loads of examples within boxing today and many in the past few years. Anyone else getting sick of this? Is this just down to the power of American promoters?
With certain situations its the old case of 'not what you know, but who you know'. All organisations linked to favoured promoters, which drifts down to favoured fighters. With regards belts its a mess that wont change due to sanctioning fees etc quantity over quality.
Sturm v Chudinov fighting for the belt tomorrow night!! dont mess about the WBA do they? On Boxnation too, should be decent fight
This double standards by the WBA and that stinkfest of the century in L.V last weekend... Been a shameful and bad week for the sport IMHO!!
Sturm vs Chudinov for the belt. Sturm a man that wasn't god enough anymore at middleweight, then Chudinov who hasn't fought anyone. Very worthy contenders................
Chudinov was the interim for a while wasn't he, don't know why but I've his name ringing in my head , why do I know him?
think Eubank jr fought another Chudinov? although it does stink a bit stripping Froch etc i am kinda glad belts are changing hands....People are holding them for way too long and they are becoming almost useless...1 year without a defence is already too long
this is exactly why they should be fighting more or vacating....there would be no need for a regular and super belt ...... tbh nobody really respects the 'regular' champ Quigg may as well have won a goldfish at the fair for all the credit he gets
