Should Louis have fought more than two black men in his 26 title defenses?

Franklin should have gotten the shot against Louis before Simon but Franklin did get stopped by Bob Paster only 4 months after the Simon win and then lost 8 out of 10 fights in a row getting stopped 7 times

Simon gave Louis a decent fight 1st time

I bet you couldn't. None of those were welterweight title defenses. None of those guys were top welterweights in the last 18 years.

    1. Louis was the # 1 rated heavyweight contender in 1951. Jimmy Bivins was unrated. Bivins was not supposed to put up a good fight against the top rated heavyweight contender.

    2. No one is saying Bivins would have beaten or come close to beating Joe Louis. I rate Joe Louis as the greatest fighter of all time.

    3. Bivins was the number 1 rated contender 1942-1943 and went on an awesome streak 1943-1945..He was the duration heavyweight champion. Based on his body of work those 3 years, I believe he earned an immediate shot at Louis title upon Joe's return.

    4. Louis only fought two times in 46. Why not fight a 3rd time against the duration heavyweight champion Bivins? He fought Mauriello(who twice got beat by Bivins)

Bivins was still the number 2 contender to Louis crown in early 1946. He was also the number 1 contender from 1943-1944. He was the duration heavyweight champion, meaning the best heavyweight in the world while Louis was gone. Look at the men who Bivins beat during this period. The highly rated big dangerous Lee Q Murray multiple times, he knocked out one of the greatest fighters who ever lived Archie Moore, and destroyed All Time Great Ezzard Charles. He also beat Mellio Bettina, twice beat your boy Tami Mauriello.

No doubt in my mind Louis should have fought Jimmy Bivins in 1946. He could have easily squeezed Bivins in there. Afterall, he defended against a out of shape, rusty alcoholic, and a man who had been twice defeated by Bivins in Mauriello.

Cut out with the Conn shhit. He got his ranking primarily on "name recognition." He was an alcoholic, his body had softened up considerably by 1946, he was dreadfully out of shape, and he hadn't fought in 4 years. He was not a world class fighter in 1946.

Lee Oma was a fat joke who didn't know how to fight

Mauriello already lost twice to Bivins

Are we talking about Conn or about Louis?

What exactly is your argument? That Conn should have been penalized for his military service and forced to start at the bottom to work his way back up?

On the Conn and Bivins thing, I think one can look at it either way, but the bottom line for Bivins is that he began losing fights in 1946. Had he continued winning, he would have gotten a shot at Louis, I think.

He simply lost his way out of contention.

Wills was considered the number one contender for several years I don't think many on Mendozy's list can claim that distinction.
The Mauler ,[my favourite fighter]was busy defending his title in starlets bedrooms for several years of his reign.

Louis liked p*ssy too but it never impacted on his title obligations, only WW2 did that and, as well as defending his crown twice free for the war effort he also donated over $10 ,000's worth of free tickets to black servicemen for three of his defences.
Mendoza has praise only for Vanilla heavyweight champions the Klits, and Jeffries, with Marciano bringing up the rear.

He would have been right at home riding a horse and carrying a rope in
    D.W .Griffith's " Birth Of A Nation".

Louis refused to box before segregated audiences when he was in the Army. he was responsible for blacks being included as members into two top US Golf Clubs.

As a direct result of his intervention 15 black soldiers went into Officers Candidate School one of those was Jackie Robinson who came out a Lieutenant.
I think Joe Louis did more for Black Americans than any other champion before or since.. Louis also paid for his fellow soldiers to go to family funerals and sometimes for the funerals themselves and he took care of quite a few hospital bills for them too,he did this through Freddy Guinyard his long time friend.
Louis boxed 96 exhibitions all over the world for the Army . One wonders what more the guy could do for his fellow blacks ?

Who states that Franklin"had to fight Pastor"? Fact is he did and was ko'd and AFTER that Louis signed to fight Simon.
The Army Relief Fund, in conjunction with Mike Jacobs set up the second Simon fight. The US Army may have had some impact on Louis's activities don't you think?

Willie Reddish was a Louis sparring partner.
Musto was kod by Louis too.
Bivins was beaten by an ancient Louis.
Simon was stopped by Louis twice.
Blunt was beaten by Mann,Burman,Galento,Simon,Bivins,Savold,Simms .
    All Louis victims.
    Sheppard was beaten by
    Bivins,Walcott Musto .
    All Louis victims.
He was also beaten by Reddish, Louis's sparring partner.

Maybe it's worth considering when Franklin was fit to fight Louis? Franklin broke his hand on Simon's head ,this was the second time he had broken it.

After the fight how long was it before he was even fit to challenge Louis?
Maybe Louis should have defended against him then, and kod him ? His chin wasn't too good was it? Then everyone could have a good time saying Louis beat up a one-handed fighter.

Just like they say Louis beat a sick Lewis,.a Lewis who had Kod Elmer Ray less than a year earlier.:think

A" sick" Lewis who was going blind,[ in one eye true.]How many fights did Greb have with one eye,Langford? Valentino?Frazier?

Lewis's previous fight before challenging Louis was just 3 months earlier he beat Al Gainer.Gainer had stopped Tony Galento in 4 rds less than 4 weeks before.

Fight stopped because of a badly cut eye suffered by Galento. Gainer battered him throughout the fight

Jesus! Some of the revisionism here leaves a very sour taste in the mouth.

Tyson never defended against a white man. That rarely gets mentioned.
