Undefeated, Best P4P fighter of the past 10 years, Very Good Resume... All Time Great Boxing Skills, Defense, Intelligence, Remarkable Physical Condition, Very Good Chin.
I agree with all of that but at welter, I believe he would have lost to Leonard, Hearns, Duran, Benitez, Curry, Tito, Oscar and maybe Maurie Blocker just in the past thirty years .. before that Robinson, Gavilan, Griffith, Armstrong, Napoles, Walker off the top of my head ... a toss up with Whitaker .. Floyd is a great fighter but not an all time top welterweight ... again, just my opinion .
I have to agree, Floyd is getting undersold in this timeline. Maybe in 10yrs history will appreciate just how good the guy is (was).
A very solid fighter, but everytime he approached class he lost. Leonard, Starling and then later on Roger Turner. You are saying he is the fifth best welter?! Brave... Personally I would struggling to place, IMO, his far more talented son on the list.
Mayweather Jr. obviously does not belong. His record at welterweight is nothing special. He's become grossly overrated of late.
Harsh to say 'grossly'; I think he has shown himself to be the class of this generation. But the Welterweight division is arguably the strongest in the sport's history. As such there is not enough substance on his resume to place him in the top five.
I don't question his ability. But I don't see many great fighters in this generation around his weight class. And his choice of opponents in the last decade has been so well orchestrated and carefully timed that it would be wrong to put him with the greats from other eras, many of whom just went out and fought the best available, almost on a monthly basis. Not wait several years for their key rivals to deteriorate before fighting them. I guess this is what "great" fighters are going to be doing from now on in.
I think the whole current "pound for pound" thing in recent years has become ridiculous too. It used to be purely a matter of opinion, a vague concept, a bit of fun and hype, not to be taken too seriously. Nowadays people are acting like it's an actual championship. The fight game has changed for the worse, and that's saying something because it was always a bit dodgy.
