Over the 11 yr period between Liston 1 & Frazier 3 who would your choices be?

Note, this is not prime for prime matches and you can pick a start point in anyones resume.

Louis between 1936-47 maybe?...but i just can't see him getting past Frazier twice and a prime Foreman almost 10 yrs after Liston.

When you think about those 5 wins over an 11 yr period it shows just how great Ali was longevity wise.

Liston in 1964 and 1965 will always be a bit of an unknown.
Might be easier than we think, or perhaps more difficult.
It's debatable whether he was in fighting condition, injured, washed-up, trying or not trying.

Valid points, but even *if* those fights were not as stern a test as expected we still have the 10yr timeline before Manilla.

Aside from Louis -- this takes me a bit by surprise, but I think that, on the hypothesis of Corbett coming along in Ali's day and absorbing the boxing technic of Ali's time, he actually would have a chance. Would have to be in terrific shape to go 12 or 15 with Frazier, though.
Sulllivan perhaps also had the natural stuff (if he had come along in that era). Would have had to submit to a very strict trainer, though.

I don't think anyone could have done that, no. Allowing even for certain question marks hanging on each and every one of these victories, it's still an astounding achievement. Certainly not one I can "predict" anyone else pulling it off.

The only other name that even deserves consideration is Lewis, although that, imo, is a long shot.

I wanted to say a young Larry Holmes could, but I don't think he could beat Joe Frazier at all.

I think if I had to pick I would pick Holmes and Lennox Lewis. It would be an enormous task however and another reason to recognise Ali's greatness.

Certainly NOT Tyson. ( even his most half witted fanboys only go on about his so called 3 year prime ) Possibly Holyfield or Lewis, but NONE from pre Liston.

I think that to make it a fair comparison, you have to make them the same age as Ali when each fight takes place, or at least make the fights the same distance apart.

Looking at it that way, I think that Louis is the only serious contender.

Yep, same timeline etc as Ali and as you say, the only one with the assured longevity is Louis, though i would say he may pick up a loss more than Ali did.

If you pick Lewis, and have him beating George Foreman the night he beat Mike Tyson, you have him beating Lewis for the first time when he beat Razor Ruddock and the second time the night be beat Frank Bruno, or something. Doesn't sound outrageous.
