I still can't get over how much they stalled his career. He could have been champion 5 years ago, but they refused to put him in with Sturm when he was the mandatory for 2 years. Sturm was their cashcow and GGG wasn't given priority in their promotional stable. It's really a shame that he's been on the sidelines for so long before K2 gave him the spotlight. There were stories about him early as the late 2000's, a star amateur who was running bigger fighters out of the gym with his vicious body punching. It wasn't when the fought Proksa (Many people picked Proksa in that fight) that people realized he was a beast in the ring. He's been very active the last few years, fighting 3-4 times a year now, but I wish we'd seen him sooner.
They didn't refuse to put him in with Sturm, the WBA let Sturm duck his mandatory and the thing Universum was guilty of was not having the means (money/influence) to make things happen for Golovkin and many of their other fighters. Universum had been broke for years until they finally went bankrupt.
Yeah, exactly. Loma just fought on the undercard of the biggest fight in the history of the sport. I'd say they knew what they were doing when they signed with Bob.
yeah Universum box promotion was all wrong for Golovkin, Felix Sturm is responsible for the delay of Golovkins career too If Sturm had fought is mandatory GGG in 2009 it would have speed up Golovkins career But now Universum box promotion is bankrupt, Sturm is done and Golovkin is probably the best middleweight since Hopkins
Truly spoken, mate! The same goes for Kotelnik or Dzindziruk who would have been big stars over there if they had left Germany for the states.
I also loved his style and the way he won his fights. He was abundantly blessed with talent but had no luck with his German promotion,Universum Box Promotion and its head Kohl. He beat and fought for far too long on small fight cards and on undercards-far too mediocre opposition for far too little money. Only when he was over the hill he got his shots at bigger names and could showcase his talent outside little german towns. What a waste of talent! A truly great fighter turned into a dwarf by the same promotion which almost ruined Golovkin's career.
Universum were putzes but the premise of this thread is incorrect. Universum may have protected Sturm briefly but the company claimed they wanted to make the Sturm-Golovkin fight when Sturm was trying to leave them and ultimately helped get Golovkin elevated to official challenger status during that dispute. The rubbish about elevating Sturm to Super Champion came from Oner and took place after he had left the company. Then Universum couldn't make fights any more and Golovkin entered into a contractual dispute which required him to fight in Panama and elsewhere before he finally broke free in 2012.
No as long as Sturm was with universum they did all to prevent a Sturm vs Golovkin fight. They just thought Sturm is just more marketable atsch Sturm is ducking Golovkin since 2009
Golovkin only became the mandatory in late 2009 after Sturm was already trying to leave Universum. Shortly later though Golovkin also started trying to leave them as well
Maybe Universum didn't actively stop the fight from happening, but they certainly didn't try to make the fight. They invested a lot in Sturm and didn't even bother to push GGG's career forward. I'm glad they're bankrupted. This discussion makes me wish Sturm would move down to Middleweight take his deserved beating from Golovkin.
