I wish I could give this more thought, I will after exams.

Pound-for-pound, on head to head ability (aka THE BEST EVER).
    1. Sugar Ray Robinson
    2. Roy Jones Jr (interchangeable with SRR)
    3. Sugar Ray Leonard
    4. Muhammad Ali
    6. Thomas Hearns
    7. Jose Napoles
    8. Roberto Duran
    9. Pernell Whitaker
    10. --

Vasyl Lomachenko once fully adapted to the pros (and if he does certain things I want him to do, which he looks to be doing increasingly) will be Top 5. I'm not going to put him into any lists just yet - let's just wait until he's in full swing first. I don't want this thread to be derailed.

Yes, I pick Monzon over Hagler. I always have done. Monzon-Roy Jones is a razor close fight.

Remember, Pernell has better offence, better in-fighting, and more intuitive defence than Mayweather.

If it's head to head why are guys from 3 different weights in there especially the heavyweight Ali?

All I'm going to say is Hearns would not even be sniffing top 10. Give him some serious whiskers and he could have truly been #1. Too many of the greats would find that chin out... it's a legitimate weakness.

Also, P4P Floyd should probably be close to or in the top 10. I don't really see why Sweat Pea should get preference over Floyd there. Floyd has beat all comers and has the tools to deal with basically any style. No disrespect to Whitaker but Floyd is around his level too H2H. He hasn't lost yet.. just sayin'.

I agree with SRR and Roy Jones Jr being in the two of the top 5 positions and maybe even the top 2 — giving Jones Jr. some benefit of the doubt here.. a seriously big puncher could still find a peak Jones Jr. out should they connect perhaps, but Whitaker and Mayweather would probably lose, for example. Jones Jr. could fight SRR 10 times and he'd decision him sometimes but at other times would get roughed up enough to lose and suffer a couple of knock-outs.

BTW, more intuitive defence does not mean "better". Floyd has worked harder at developing a formula than Whitaker ever did. They are both instinctive enough, though. Floyd is a better ring general than Pernell.

Peak SRL might be high on the list but he was goaded by Duran in the first fight and found out psychologically and he can be outboxed (Hearns). SRL is an overrated "boxer". He's a great boxer no doubt, but what made him special was not his ability to be a boxing technician but his "feeling for the moment" and his killer instinct — that's what took him over the edge. There have been better technicians.

It's nothing to do with resume. It's to do with comparing the top 0.00000000000000000001% of the best to every do anything and come up with valid reasons to separate them. Why is Whitaker above Gomez? Why is Mayweather above Frazier? It looks, to me, like a bit of a nonsense.

But I suppose a bit of fun too.

It is fun. Well we know Mayweather's better than HW John Ruiz for example..(this isn't about John Ruiz in the ring vs Mayweather as you know).

    Go on McGrain.

Well, if they are fighting each other head to head... I'm picking 10 Heavyweights as well.

    1. Ali
    2. Holmes
    3. Holyfield
    4. Foreman
    5. Tyson
    6. Lewis
    7. Bowe
    8. V. Klitschko
    9. W. Klitschko
    10. Tough call, I think Louis or Frazier could fit in here despite their lack of size.

I really wanted to find room for Marciano, Charles, Johnson, Tunney, and others... but I tried to keep my heart out of it.
