I think it all comes down to people overrating Segura's victories over Ivan Calderon. Calderon would have beat the **** out of Segura if he weren't so old and featherfisted. I didn't watch the second match but I saw the first one and Calderon, a very talented fighter, would hit Segura three times for every one that landed on him. The only difference was that Calderon's shots did nothing to Segura and Segura's shots hurt Calderon.

Segura is a one dimensional power puncher. He's strong, he's got good stamina and chin, but is pretty low in terms of technique. You can see it in the recent fight where Estrada just dances around him doing whatever he wants. When people had Segura in the top ten p4p they made a mistake, which they promptly compounded by placing Viloria temporarily in the p4p lists after he beat him.

I don't think he was ever that good. He was always flyweight's version of Matthysse or Maidana: a s****py hard hitting gate keeper, who got in exciting fights.

While I do think this a good post and agree with the sentiments in this post, and was guilty of them to small extents myself perhaps, hopefully you can admit you were being very extreme just to get your point across in calling Matthysse, Maidana, and Segura "gatekeepers." They are clearly level(s) above that.

Segura/Calderon II was sad, by the way. Nothing like the epic war in their first fight. Segura walked him down real quick, punished him, and Calderon took the 10 count on his knee before the beating was visibly apparent.

As for the outcome of Segura/Calderon I, I'm not sure it was overrated. Especially when you consider that 33% of posters reading our conversation don't know or haven't watched either of them. Calderon is a future HOF'er who is one of the best "little men" in boxing history to carry their undefeated record so late into their career... It's debatable.

I didn't mean gatekeeper to be so negative. I meant it in the sense that while they weren't quite good enough to dominate and be the man in their division only the elite would beat them and go on to challenge for the title. A gatekeeper as I mean it is basically a solid top ten contender that separates the authentic talents from the hype jobs and pretenders.

Zab Judah, Orlando Salido, and Tony Thompson are gatekeepers in the sense that I am using it. Though perhaps I'm still not giving Matthysse and Maidana their due.

Usyk and Kudryashov are no hypejobs. Try watching their fights instead of judging from Boxrec

I have watched several Usyk fights and one of Kudryashovs. I think they are good, not great fighters, and I think that cruiserweight is kind of a ****ty division that lets people into the top spots off of just a handful of fights. There are about five guys who know how to fight Huck, Lebedev, Wlod, Drozd, Yoan the slothful, and the rest are just there to be beat. I also think that Usyk needs a haircut.

I hope Juan Francisco Estrada is ringside and HBO actually acknowledges his existence. The rematch between Gonzalez and Estrada is still one of the best matchups you can make in boxing.
