Monroe couldn't hurt him, that was why he went in looking for the KO with no regards to defense. If he fights someone with power he's not going to be that reckless.

Monroe impressed. GGG needs to not fall in love with his power too much, he should still be working on defense against these guys.

Nice performance by GGG. Turned it on when he had to.

Plan backfired as the ref said you only just beat the count next time you've got to get up sooner, asked him if he wanted to continue and he said no.

As you say though, fair play to Monroe he put up a good fight for as long as he could.

I gave him 2, but thought the first round was by no means a shutout.

The end reminded me of an old referee I knew in the late 1970s into the 80s in the South, last name of Brown (can't recall his first name), a no-nonsense guy on the club circuit.

He'd seen the old "jump up right after 10 and complain" trick too many times, and when he sensed that a guy was just taking the easy way out he would do the count verbally along with his hands ...

    1
    2
    3
    4
    5
    6
    7
    8
    9 ...

... and then he'd do his hands like he was counting 10 but wouldn't say it out loud.

If the guy hopped up, he'd just wipe the gloves and say "Fight!" I saw three or four veteran opponent types get caught with this. One of them just grinned and shook his head at the ref and like "you son of a b****' ... and the guy who was down always kind of knew he'd been shown up so would fight harder for a while just because they could tell it would look bad to the crowd if they went down again.

Golovkin looked a little bit flat but Monroe was good. I think he made Golovkin look bad but good performance by Golovkin.
