People keep making statements i.e. Tyson haters that he just fought bums in the 80's. But were they actually bums or he just made them look like bums and made koing them look easy?

    Some of them were bums.
Some of them were good fighters.
Some of them had been good fighters but were on the way to becoming bums.

I think one thing people make the mistake off is judging most of the guys Tyson fought in the 80's based on how their overall careers turned out in the end especially after Tyson beat them. You have to carefully and objectively note who these fighters were and their position in the HW division at the time Tyson fought them.

Exactly. Tyson benefited from coming along in one of the weaker eras of HW boxing, but he also blew away some of these "Lost Generation" mediocrities like no one else had before.

So it's a little bit of both, I suppose - yeah, he fought some bums, but he also made it look easy with better fighters.

Good grief. Every fighter has those type of "bums" on their ledger.

The difference is some "Bums" KO the heavyweight champ not only once but twice with ONE shot............some other Mohawk Euro bum goes the distance and yet another Euro bum gets robbed in Vegas while facing the most powerful Champ of the Burger grill that has ever lived ...

Yes, yes I did. Hey Young came to fight, it's just that Tyson pushed that nose bone into his brain, so it's not who he beat but how...forget it.

The likes of Tubbs and Berbick, Tyson definitely deserves credit for making it look easy.

Those were typically quite awkward opponents, pretty good fighters, and to put them away in 2 rounds in that sort of manner took something special.

Many of Tyson's victims in his first 12 months as a pro were bums. But, with a solid ko over tough Journeyman Jessie Feguson in Jan 86 Tyson significantly upgraded his level of competition.

Tillis: good boxer, in shape, Tyson was still learning. Tillis was a Journeyman when Tyson fought him, but a live journeyman having gone the distance with M. Frazier, Coetzee and Biggs in recent fights. Tyson wins a tough, close dec.
    M. Frazier: busy fighter, good fundamentals, but mediocre chin. Fringe Contender when Tyson fought him. Tyson blew him out in devastating fashion.
Jose Ribalta: Journeyman type. Tall and durable. Tyson punished him and finally stopped him late.
Mitch Green: Top 20 type. Tall, very durable, moderate skills. Tyson won an easy decision.
Berbick: tough guy, good chin and usually very durable. Berbick was a legitimate top 3 heavyweight when Tyson fought him. Tyson blew him away.
Bonecrusher: tough guy, very good power, mediocre boxing ability. Had just surprised an out of sorts Witherspoon. Smith although a champion, was a top 10 type. Tyson won every round
Pinklon Thomas: He was faded by the time Tyson fought him. Probably not even top 10 material at that point. His reflexes were going. Tyson handed him a pretty brutal beating.
Tucker: legitimate top 10 guy, having stopped Buster Douglas in his previous fight. Great height and reach, decent movement, moderate power and reliable chin. Tyson was made to work hard and was even briefly stunned early. Tyson was able to out jab the much taller Tucker and slip inside. Fairly close decision for Tyson.
Biggs: Probably a top 10-20 guy. He showed slippage already in close fights with Renaldo Snipes and David Bey. He seemed to peak against Tillis in early '86. Tyson took care of him rather easily.
Holmes: probably still a top 10 type, but inactive for almost 2 yrs after losing a close decision to Spinks. Tyson took him out rather easily.
Tubbs: Legitimate top 10 contender, but had been relatively inactive. Very good boxer, but without the power to trouble Tyson. Tyson blew him out after a competitive first round,
Spinks: Legitimate top 3 heavyweight, having twice beaten Holmes and blew out ****ey. Spinks was intimidated by Tyson probably because of Tyson's strength, youth and power. Spinks was blown out early.
Bruno: Legitimate top 10 type having ran out of gas in fights against Smith and Witherspoon. Tyson beat him without too much trouble although he got hit more than in previous championship fights.
Williams: Legitimate top 10 contender having almost beaten Holmes, beat a tough Bert Cooper and a somewhat faded Berbick. Weak chin led to loss to Mike Weaver in a fight Williams was dominating until getting caught by a left hook. Tyson also stopped Williams with a left hook after a probing early first round.

Id say none of his '80s opponents, starting with and post Jessie Ferguson were bums. I will say that he did get a title shot without beating a legitimate top 10 contender. His overall list of opposition is solid. I'd say it looks really good when you compare it to the opposition of Wlad Klitchko.

You're not even trying. The least number of posts on a Tyson thread before some numpty slags off Lennox Lewis is much lower than 8.:roll:

Either try harder or don't bother.
