How would rocky fare against the tough as nails Canadian Champ? In a 3 fight triology who would win the majority? How would Chuvalo fare against the Louis, Moore, Walcott and Charles that Rocky fought?
Rocky beats Chuvalo.. Probably all three times if they fought. Green versions of Frazier and Foreman with umpteen number of fights were able to break him down, though one of them was a controversial stoppage. Chuvalo also loses to the crew who Rocky fought or at least the names you listed.
This is one of the better match ups you can make... I think Marciano in the end dishes out tremendous punishment to Chuvalo and perhaps even gets the knockout or a TKO, but I'd expect Chuvalo to be in the fight the entire time. I think it would be contested at close range with lots of punches being traded back and forth. Marciano would be relentless throughout and would whack away with bombs on Chuvalo while Chuvalo would take them and whenever he could he'd bring back punches of his own.
I would never question Chuvalo's chin or durability. But being realistic, the tough hitters that his whiskers stood up to were of the Mike Dejohn, Cleveland Williams and Bob Cleroux variety.. His only two stoppages also came against the only two hall of fame quality punchers he ever faced and both of whom were still more or less prospects when this happened. Now take the fully matured and seasoned Rocky Marciano who beat Walcott for the title and place him in the ring with Chuvalo. How would George have fared with some of those relentless attacks and crossing blows coming from every direction? I agree with you that it would be a good fight and George would show every ounce of heart and courage he could muster. But I have to bet on a Marciano stoppage win sometime in the mid rounds..Especially if it were a referee from a later period calling the shots in there. Chuvalo would be taking too much punishment for his own good.
I wonder if Chuvalo could stay with Rocky for 15 and not go down. Can you imagine the damage inflicted in this fight....
Pete Radmacher and Eduardo Corletti beat Chuvalo. I just don't see any great fighter losing to a guy who lost to those type of guys in his prime. I'm not saying it would not be a great fight. George was big and game but Rocky did everything better. Another level.
Marciano beats Chuvalo .George may have been better than Layne but he wasn't good enough to beat Rocky. U Dec in a competitive fight.
Mcvey, I know you have been to a lot of 1960s boxing in London. did you get to the Chuvalo v Corletti fight in London?
You might be right about the fight ending in the mid rounds... I see Marciano unleashing onslaughts on Chuvalo like he did to Moore just Chuvalo is one extremely durable guy... Yes Frazier and Foreman stopped him but I feel Chuvalo could take Marciano's onslaught a little better. Remember when Foreman stopped Chuvalo he was still on his feet after taking a tremondos beating and was coherent enough to quickly argue the stoppage. Marciano I don't feel could unleash the same kinda onslaught Foreman did, Marciano's tends to give a longer more drown out destruction of his opponents compared to Foreman. So like I said I could see Marciano getting the stoppage perhaps even eventually pounding Chuvalo to the canvas but I could also conceive Chuvalo taking Marciano into the late rounds or going the distance he was a tough dude and he also was bigger then Marciano.. I also believe Chuvalo would dish out his share of punishment on Marciano in the process and make it one hell of a fight.
Without even just a little bit of cleverness , big punching power or great speed, how in the hell do you beat Rocky Marciano? Chuvalo had none of those qualities,...just his chin, strength and dogged, straight ahead type persistence...which wouldn't have cut it vs the Rock. Far more interesting would have been one of Chuvalo's contemporaries, Oscar Bonavena. Oscar had a way of dealing with a prime (or near prime) Joe Frazier....a physical type not dissimilar to Rocky Marciano. As he proved against Chuvalo himself, and to an extent vs Frazier, Oscar had an awkwardly clever, "Plan B" type of style against a committed slugger/swarmer,...and was more of a puncher than Chuvalo. I think that would have been a better matchup....but I don't want to hijack this thread any more than I may have already.
I agree with this as much as I admire Chuvalo's chin and strength, he did get hit an awful lot and enough that the ref had enough. I think there would be a point in this fight that the ref would wave it off
Well. If Marciano is that much better than Chuvalo, and you replace Chuvalo with Marciano in his fights with Frazier, Foreman, and Ali. Seeing as Chuvalo did well with them, Marciano being better could beat them. I would say this is a good answer to the other thread. ( How would Marciano fare in the 70's)
