Isn't Defense Just Avoiding Fighting?

When did that become exciting? People paying money to watch Whitaker, Ward, Mayweather, Rigodeux to basically avoid engaging and run around the ring.

This is the most absurd logic to anyone that's actually interested in combat sports.

Sport is boxing, not fighting...And secondly yes if ALL you do is move around and not throw a single punch that is not boxing...but those guys almost always do more damage to their opponent, land more clean/effective punched than is done to them.

Boxing is to out fight your opponent using your mind. Some forego the mind part (brawlers) and some forego the fight part and use only their mind to out point their opponent (boxing purists) The term does in fact encompass fighting which is why it's considered a combat sport. And them doing more damage is still due to defense. You can produce very little offense but if you defend far better than they do it will still make your offense look good, it doesn't mean it really is.

its annoying when defensive experts are touted as JUST defensive fighters
can you not SEE the punches they throw??
stop with the exaggarating terms like "run all night"
they have to throw to win and they do

Wow, all time record worst post. Seriously, you had some stiff competition too. Many have tried, but you actually did it! Congrats!

Doubt he'd even make it through a whole clip. He's probably the type of guy who says Castillo/Chico is his all time favorite fight and all he's ever watched is round 10 on youtube.

Defence is a part of all sport, more or less. In case you forgot, this game is called

Yes, indeed. Fights should consist of 2 guys standing in front of one another and taking turns hitting each other until one falls over. That would be some scintillating viewing.

If there was no defence in boxing you'd just have two guys taking turns to punch one another until one drops.

Also a good defence can set up traps and counters, defence combined with offence will always be superior.

If more fans didn't put so much importance in a fighters 0 being the equivalent of the glory hunter and actually followed fighters because they like how they fight then you'ed see some fighters be more entertaining to chase the dollar.

Winky Wright altered how he fought and became more aggressive to get fights and Rigo seems to be doing the same. We can all moan at fighters like Mayweather for being too defensive but by paying for his fights making him the biggest earning fighter in boxing history you are only perpeuating his defensive style. So anyone moaning about this and still paying for his fights shouldn't be complaining because they are part of the problem.

Personally I like defensive fighters and enjoy Mayweathers style so it doesn't bother me.

any and all collision sports require defense, for the most part.

when I think of a great boxer with no defense the young Foreman comes to mind...an exception indeed:yep

Just any sport that involves the players directly competing against each other at the same time in direct opposition, so all the racket sports for example, but not really golf. Solo time trialling doesn't really require it I suppose, such as skiing... oh and ski jumping.
