This is one of the best video studies i have seen on him. It makes even sadder to see the amount of potential and talent he squandered due to some dumb ass decisions.

Everyone should take a look and comment.

Yet he had no plan B when when the going got tough, not quite as smart in the ring as once thought...

Then that must imply that Buster Douglas's victory was bonafide and not because tyson had an "off night"....which is what I have always maintained, despite the fact that Tyson was indeed a brilliant offensive fighter.

Nice vid! I've always liked Mike. Really exciting to watch in his prime. But i honestly think his style demanded too much, and even if he didn't make the wrong decisions he did, we'd have seem just a few more years of him using that style effectively at most.

Awesome vĂdeo. Thanks for posting. Tyson is probably the biggest waste of talent among the heavyweights. It's a pitty that Tyson has begun to decline so Young, at only 23 years old...

Of course, Tyson could have stayed disciplined for longer but he would have needed to develop his style a bit, I reckon, to remain effective. And I'm not sure that was possible with the style and trainer he had. There seems to be some sort of myth surrounding the D'Amato style that doesn't quite stand up.

The truth is, that style would not be effective for long. It requires too much energy and a lot of flexibility and movement of the torso . Also, the peek-a-boo defense/offense is a crowd-pleasing method but when a fighter comes along who can time it and crack it well, there's nothing to fall back on.

Really, Cus D'Amato was most interested in providing a SPECTACULAR EXCITING effective style, one that could set up two-fisted attacks from either side.
    It's not a complete style I could imagine a long-reigning champion utilizing.

Tyson's biggest disadvantage of course was his height and reach. I think it's remarkable that he was so effective for so long.
I do believe people overrate him "head to head".

Possibly, if he'd adapted his style more along the lines of a Roberto Duran and worked towards more variety in defensive tools, and learned to box on the back foot well too, then we'd be talking about a complete fighter who might have reigned for another 4 or 5 years.
But that wasn't the style under D'amato and Rooney, and with his height and reach deficit it probably wasn't possible.

Tyson's decline started way before it should have. If you look at boxing history, swarmers, brawlers, high work rate fighters like Marciano, Frazier, Dempsey were all finished by the time they reached 30.

Tyson's reflexes, skills in the ring started suffering because of his poor training habits post Rooney. I feel if he had continued along training like a beast like he did with the Catskills crowd his reflexes would have started declining by the time he got to 29-30. That would have been the right time for a fighter of his style to retire.

I agree he still had a lot of improvements to make. I personally feel he really needed to develop his infighting skills, he was always so lackluster in clinches, he needed to work more on body shots in those situations. I also agree yes he needed to work on fighting backwards when pushed. But let's face it not everyone can be the complete ultimate fighter, everyone has some weakness.

I don't think Tyson getting hit on and off was a problem. The bigger problem was he stopped doing what made him so successful from 1985-88, neglected defense and most importantly stopped training for 12 whole rounds.

When you are an on top fighter, you don't need brilliant skills, and ring IQ. It's when you are faced with adversity they are needed. Tyson failed miserably.

That left uppercut from Tony Tucker in the first round briefly staggered Tyson. He recovered nicely and continued on his game plan. It wasn't like he was untouched before the Douglas fight. Ruddock hit hime quite a bit with some very powerful shots, but Tyson beat him twice. He didn't fold the tent once the going got a little tough throughout his whole career. Post prison, yes it happened a few times.

Tyson was a defensive counter punching fighter prior to his parting ways with Kevin Rooney. That was always the most important. Once he became easier to find for opponents he became like most shorter fighters, and he was an era of boxer mover types.

No one is saying he didn't take his punishment bravely. He just couldn't come out on top from persistent adversity. You can mention as many single shots, or the few he took back from Ruddock all you want, it alters nothing.

If you are implying that the 2 Ruddock fights were anything like even you are simply wrong. At least you haven't come out with the usual old chestnut about his deterioration being due to splitting with Rooney, so all credit to you.:good

As if your beloved Lenni Chinny Cant take a punch to the face Lewi didn't get knocked down like a girl from the single shots to the face from no body's like Mccall and Rahman. Excellent example of someone coming back from adversity in the same match. :hi:

You can bs about Tyson as much as you want, it doesn't change the chinniness of Lenni cant take a punch to the face Lewi.

Lewis/Tyson fight would always be close to a 50/50 call. The strategy lewis used, which was to land uppercuts, lean on Tyson, push him back and manhandle him, along with throwing the overhand right when Tyson trying getting inside would have always caused Tyson problems. On the flip side the speed of Tyson might have caused Lewis problems. But if you want to go to youtube, you can easily find bouts including the Tyson bout, where Lewis was hit flush and it never phased him. Tua landed a couple of great shots against him too, and Vitali landed more punches than I can remember, but Lewis beat them all.

Actually if anything it tells me that perhaps Rahman and McCall are better fighters than Vitali, since he couldn't do what they managed to do. God he much have been ****py to not be able to get to the china chin Lewis, instead he got the **** beat out of him, as did Tyson..hahahahahahaha.

And if Lenni has a china chin, yet beat these guys, you my friend have losers for heros.
