It's nothing to do with emotion, I just don't rate him, his opposition or era. Boxing hadn't reached it's plateau. And the fact he had a a smokes and mirror career where he avoided all major challenges doesn't help his cause.
I've heard that Dempsey, at least physically, was pretty much Tyson before Tyson was Tyson. Same body dimensions (though Tyson's neck was thicker). But also similar power and speed, though they obviously had different styles. Although Dempsey's greatness shouldn't be downplayed, he's still a cruiserweight, right? And I don't think much of the Willard that Dempsey destroyed. I don't think that Dempsey fairs well against great hws like Holmes or Foreman or even good hws like the Klitschkos.
Crazy talk here. Truely great fighters are considered great by those around him during their era. Dempsey like Louis, like Jeffries, like Marciano, like Ali, like Holmes, like Lewis were all termed top of the line great fighters by those writers, historians, and most importantly trainers of their era. You don't find that praise of those who were NOT ATG fighters. You won't find this level of praise concerning Schmeling, Sharkey, Carnera, Baer, Braddock, and so on. The reason is all through boxing history great boxing nimbus knew greatness when they saw it. So when Sam Langford, Ray Arcel, Whitey Bimstein, Lou Still man, Dan Morgan, Nat Fleischer ALL stated that Dempsey was great it means something because these people did not bestow the label of greatness readily and they knew what great boxing was all about. As examples... Langford. " Dempsey is the greatest hwt I have ever seen". Arcel (who trained Max Baer). "People asked me when I trained Baer how his right hand compared to Dempseys. It was not close!" Also "when I first saw Duran I thought he was the closest thing I ever saw to Jack Dempsey". Tunney "Dempsey was no crude slugger but instead a melt of great boxer and puncher. You can degrade these thoughts from great boxing minds if you like but you are making a HUGE mistake. Learn to appreciate the great talent Dempsey was rather than degrade him. Dempsey was one of the most talented, brutal hwts in boxing history. An unusual once in a lifetime combination of speed, aggressive two handed extreme short punching power and boxing ability.
Lol McVea trying to justify dempseys power based on his bicep size lol. Everyone knows power doesn't come for your biceps
I guarantee you he hit way too hard for any fool in a poxy bodybuilers gym to chance laughing at him.
As usual you totally miss my point, do you ever grasp things first time around or do you have to rely on having them explained to you later? Power puncher described Dempsey as a skinny weakling, I merely pointed out that his biceps were the same size as Liston's, now unless you think Dempsey was built like Pop Eye that would indicate he was far from skinny wouldn't it? As to him being a weakling I suggest anyone believing this should watch him pick 210lbs unconscious Firpo up off the floor without apparent effort. I know about musculature and hitting power because, unlike you I boxed. Post script. Its really quite amusing you twitting me on this , being as you are the Forum's Poster Boy for manic inclusion of heights and weights when posting!:yep Now you just regroup and try and think of another puerile jibe to try and annoy me with Sunny Jim.:hi:
Dempsey was playing around with one of his trainers and gave him a body shot, he had to have a kidney removed as a result. Max Baer asked him how he would keep an opponent "honest in close?" Dempsey brought his fist down on Baer's forearm and numbed it for 2 days.
If anyone would be able to bring up these little anecdotes instantly regarding Dempsey, I'd have my money on it being you Mac.:good Oh, and I don't doubt a word of it.
And Dempsey seems to be the only person that Baer was willing to listen to, when it came to technique.
Powerpuncher can beat prime Dempsey. He's already said that before. It is likely, because Powerpuncher has 18-inch arms at least.
