Oh burt, far be it from being critical of Dempsey's power, in fact, what I was saying, though probably not as well as I could have, was that sometimes, as you've noted, a great puncher doesn'r always dispose on an adversary with just a few punches, let alone with a classic 1 shot ko,...this was the case with Willard, yet it was a prime example of murderous punching anyway, as was the destruction of Luis Firpo. On another given occasion, Jack could have very well disposed of either man as he did Sharkey, wit one shot, or he could have wrecked them with the short blur of power shots that decked Tunney. In the last example, I don't think that either Willard or Firpo would have survived the blitz that put Tunney down in that memorable 7th round...Tunney had both the great chin and superlative recovery powers, along with the crystal clear boxing IQ necessary to resort to a Plan B to survive the follow up onslaught like he did. I can think of very few fighters who could survive the wrath of Dempsey....he's one of the most explosive, devastating power punchers of all time. He was as deadly as a Mojave rattlesnake, as Jack Sharkey found out.
He's a guy who would probably make me fill my trousers .and I hope I'm not bigging myself up by saying that would be a first.
I think you are right Dempsey saw the potential in Baer but was frustrated by his attitude. Baer in turn idolised Dempsey
Yes I boxed .Do you think I was born old? Wanabbee's like yourself make me smile, failed Rambo's. I bet you have camouflage shorts! 40 years ago I would put a ***** like you under my arm and spank him. Tempus Fugits. You have a good life young man.:good
You don't even know what I do for a living. I never failed at anything. I have a great job. Keep grasping. You must be unhappy because you have a Shiitty pension? I wish you were in your prime. I would take you to the ground in about 5 seconds and beat the stuffing out of you until you asked me to stop.
rc, sorry if I seemed critical of your post...Please understand I was a youngster growing up reading and listening to boxing folks who saw Dempsey and Louis and others, and ALL held Dempsey in AWE as a tough and destructive puncher and beloved figure in retirement. A MAN'S MAN... And today 70 or so years later mainly on ESB, some uninformed Dempsey haters try so damn hard to diminish his true greatness as a top heavyweight destructive puncher who never *****ed or complained in the ring. Can you blame me for trying to defend him ???...If not me, who ?.
Black Cloud, do you know what came before the Big Bang ?. FOREPLAY !!! atsch P.S. I am so old that my social security number is in Roman Numerals !
It's all cool burt:thumbsup we're on the same team,...the same page! I despise the historical revisionista....their **** just keeps going on and on. You know, "Dempsey sucks", "Carnera was a great fighter", "Marciano was a talentless face first plodder", etc.,...it's just gotten waaay out of hand. Anyway, Dempsey earned his ring pedigree in the real world and no modern day keyboard warrior with an agenda can take anything away from him!!
if Dempsey had fought and beat Greb and Wills I would probably rank him in my top 4 all time Instead he sits at number 13 all time. That's the price you have to pay for not facing the two best contenders of your era
