DeGale beat Dirrell in his own country when he was only operating at about 45% of Chunky maximum ability. It's common knowledge his trainer Jim McDonnell is an absolute slave driver in the gym and I hear DeGale had a 13 week camp some say 16 for this fight. Also Dirrell had a near 90 second break to recover during the interval between the 2nd and 3rd round ie. after the round where he just been dropped twice (one of which heavily) and been badly hurt so who knows maybe he wouldn't have even seen the 4th round had it been the standard 60 seconds.
that was for 2 rounds he had a 90second break. talk about home cooking. Was like terry o'conner dragged cleverly onto his stool against kovalev. :nut
Yes I remember thinking at the time that there was another extra long interval at the end of the 4th round (I think) where again Dirrell had been hurt in the previous round. I downloaded the fight but there must have been adverts on that broadcast because it cuts straight to the start of the next round. Unless I'm confusing the rounds and it was a different one? I'll have a look at it again later.
I'll copy and paste my other post: I think people are judging Andre Dirrell too harshly. He controlled larger portions of the fight than DeGale while DeGale's moments were much better. They both won 6 rounds, but DeGale had the 10-7 round. Even in that round, Dirrell was winning it handily until he got dropped. I believe his inactivity hurt him and he hadn't fought that level of competition in years. He was doing things that worked against the journeymen he was fighting, but not against elite fighters. Dirrell would do much better in a rematch imo. DeGale is a great fighter though
I'll also note that Dirrell made some really good adjustments as the fight went on. He started to pick his hands up and we look to smother DeGale on the ropes. Dirrell was able to drop his hands and rely strictly on his reflexes vs lesser opposition. I think in a rematch, he'll come straight out knowing what he needs to do
personally I think degale lost rounds 6-11 because he thought he had the fight won and tactically he though he'd stay out of trouble and counter, except he didn't land any counter punches. When he went back on the front foot in round 12 he won it. If he stays on the front foot he'd win easily imo Dirrell showed heart and commitment I didn't know he had, on the flip side he showed he wasn't as good a boxer as I thought he was.
I actually meant between the 3rd and 4th. I checked it last night but like I said there were adverts cut out on the version I have. And let me just clarify what I mean by a near 90 second interval between the 2nd and 3rd rounds. I mean from the bell at the end of round 2 to the start of action in round 3.
