You could make the argument that he was the WBO champ x2 because he beat Mosley but didn't pay the sanctioning fee. However, then you'd have to remove the IBF belt he got from Zab who only held it because baldomir didn't pay the fee.

I've heard that, too, but there doesn't seem to be any evidence for it. It's just a rumour.

If it did happen then there is no record of the fight ever having taken place.

Anyway it doesnt take anything away from Chavez' official achievements, all of which still stand today.

    :good Thanks.

That's the best article I've ever seen on the issue.

So, not a myth after all.

However it does nothing to lessen Chavez' reputation. DQ's should count, of course, but it isn't the same as getting beaten.

He did KO the guy, it seems, but was it a sucker punch, or was the other guy still engaged?

It was probably just genuine, end of the round, heat of the moment stuff.

Who knows the full details? Maybe it really was poor refereeing and the decision was legitimately over turned (like Hagler's knock down against Roldan). Or maybe it was just blatant corruption. How can we be sure?

Chavez was such a tremendous fighter I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt.

The 37 title fights, winning 31 with 27 consecutive defences is still pretty impresive and still the record.

    don't forget about Corrales also.

and I think the IBF is safe since he beat Judah and Baldomir back to back

    According to Wikipedia

    160: IBF
    168: IBF
175: WBC, WBA, IBF, IBO, NBA, WBF, IBA, IBC
    200: WBU
    200+: WBA

Where you draw the line in regards to what a "world title" is up for debate though I guess

    Agreed.

for my 2 cents the legit world titles are the big 4 WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF.... I give the IBO fringe contender status. it's worthwhile having but it only just gets a pass.

NBA, IBA, IBC, WBU ar enothing more than regional titles in my opinion.

Before he was super rich, he wouldn't even pay the sanctioning fees for the other world titles.
