How I beat Mike Tyson, by Lennox Lewis

In his own words Lennox Lewis reveals how he defeated ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson

    25, May, 2015

MIKE TYSON and I had history. We were supposed to fight in the World Junior championships in the Dominican Republic but they didn’t take the flight. It was his trainer Cus D’Amato who didn’t like to take planes.

There was a buzz about him. There was talk that he was the best guy on the American team so me and my trainer, Arnie Boehm, took a car up to the Catskills to go and spar him. Sparring got better and better. On the fifth day he dropped his hands and invited me to hit him so I did. Then D’Amato yelled, ‘Mike, don’t do that. You’re going to be fighting him one day!’ So I always wondered if it would happen.

With Tyson, if you’re scared, you’ve lost. But I’d been in there with him and I knew what to expect. I always told people, ‘Mike Tyson is a one-dimensional fighter, Lennox Lewis is a five-dimensional fighter.’ But I was impressed with what he had gone on to achieve [after the sparring sessions]. All of a sudden he turned into King Kong. Where did that guy come from? All of a sudden he was knocking out all these guys and I was still an amateur. I knew that was the level I had to get to, and that was the guy I had to beat.

He bit me at the press conference and I said to myself, ‘I’m not fighting this guy. He’s mad. We don’t fight like that, we’re supposed to be gladiators.’ My trainer [Emanuel Steward] told me he did that because he was trying to get out of the fight. If I had not gone through with it, he would always have had that bite, and I would never have had the chance to get him back. So I went through with it, and I didn’t complain about the bite because people would have accused me of not wanting to fight him.

Everyone makes the argument that I didn’t beat a young Mike Tyson. That argument is wrong because he wasn’t fighting a young Lennox Lewis either. Tyson’s fighting style hadn’t changed. I felt his power in the beginning of the fight. Early on, I wanted to control the ring but so did he and I realised I was fighting his fight. He threw a couple of nice shots that clipped me and my trainer Emanuel said, ‘Why are you fighting like that? You’re giving him a chance.’

Even though I was in control I was always careful. I couldn’t presume he had given up because even a cat that is backed up against the wall will attack, they have that last attempt to survive. I couldn’t presume the fight was won before it was. If I had lost concentration, I would have become just a statistic. The only time I saw the fight go out of him was when he attempted to get back up [in round eight] and the referee waved it off.

You're full of surprises Savak :good

But I gotta agree, there's no lack of ego on the man, and I'm no fan of someone talking about themselves in the 3rd person.

Tyson didn't even deserve a title shot. I'm not sure he wanted it really either.
It was a fraudulent 'money' fight, worse even than the recent May-Pac mega-fight.

Tyson fans and Lewis fans will disagree with me perhaps, but I believe there were plenty of fighters around in 2002 who would likely have beat Tyson.
Sure, he had his puncher's chance still against most of them, but even with that he'd have to rely on doing what he did to Botha because his finishing abilities had gone, and a lot of heavyweights would have beaten him on heart and motivated by making a name for themselves off his name.

He beat Golota (changed to an NC because of smoking weed), but that's a very good win worthy of a title shot. Especially when you consider Golota deserved to beat Byrd and put Ruiz down twice losing a close decision.

Tyson could of still beat many top 10 guys like Ruiz, Byrd, Rahman but would lose to Vitali at this stage. He might have smoked Wlad at this stage though as Wlad was struggling against punchers and pressure. He'd have beat Sanders and Tua who had worse stamina than Mike.

So Tyson was probably top3 in the world at this stage

Didnt he settle a lawsuit for something like $14 mill only a few weeks before this fight?

Golota had lost to Michael Grant less than a year earlier.

Also, Tyson's win over Golota was followed by a year of inactivity, then he turned up against looked sloppy and over-weight against Brian Nielsen.

Tyson v Golota was 20 months prior to Tyson against Lewis.

Obviously, Evander Holyfield would have beaten the sh!t out of him.

And, no, he wouldn't have beat all those fighters. He stands a puncher's chance against some, or all, of them. But that's about it.

Next in the series, Kostya Tszyu: 'How I beat Julio Cesar Chavez', followed quickly by Travis Browne: 'How I overcame James Toney'. Just shut up with your third person, pseudo-intellectual nonsense Lennox.

How are things on fantasy island these days?

Just get a few things straight. Tyson was the biggest commodity in boxing at that time, with hundreds of millions of dollars at his disposal if necessary, and an army of lawyers, that only big business or governments can afford.

Ever wonder why those resources weren't employed? Well I'll tell you, because DNA, and medical evidence DOESN'T lie. A semi literate street piece of sh it from Brooklyn, on the other hand.

It doesn't matter, Golota was still a major win, it was a win that got Grant the title shot in less impressive fashion. Let's not be revisionist and pretend anyone wanted to see Ruiz and Byrd get shots in front of Tyson and Grant. And 20 months is nothing in boxing.

No he doesn't only 'stand a punchers chance', he's quicker and a better boxer than all of them and few have significant size advantages. Can we seriously see the Ruiz who was outboxed by a fat old 5'9 Toney outboxing Mike Tyson

Holyfield may have beaten him but maybe not as he faded badly around this time, Tyson was actually doing better than Holyfield at this time.
