All that said ... Cotto might be the most overrated fighter of his era.

He spent a career winning vacant belts. There was:
* the VACANT WBO Super Lightweight belt he won against Kelson Pinto
* the VACANT WBA Welterweight title he won against Carlos Quintana
* the VACANT WBO Welterweight title he won against Michael Jennings.

For a "four division champ," it was strange that the first "reigning" champ Cotto defeated came 10 years into his pro career against Yuri Foreman (and you think Sylvester was bad?) for the WBA Super Welterweight title, after Foreman suffered a LEG INJURY.

That said, it was crucial for Cotto to beat these fringe guys, because on those rare occasions when he stepped up he tended to get owned - by Margarito, Pacquiao, Mayweather and Trout.

He even struggled to survive against Ricardo Torres at super lightweight and Joshua Clottey at welterweight.

In fact, before Cotto faced a physically injured Sergo Martinez (YET ANOTHER LEG INJURY) to take this title in his last bout, Cotto's biggest win probably came against Clottey (Geale's beaten better fighters than him).

If Cotto had been based in Germany throughout his career, I'm sure his title wins over Pinto, Quintana, Jennings and Foreman wouldn't have rated very highly at all. Because there were always better champs in the division when Cotto went after those lesser guys.

And, unless Geale suffers a LEG INJURY, he's probably got a 50-50 shot at winning against Cotto.

 

Cotto was getting beat up By Tores until he landed his series of low blows for which, if I am not mistaken, he was not even warned properly.

I really do not mind Geale. He is an elite fighter and appears to be a good person and family man.

On a side note: I had no idea Golovkin used Ivalyo Gotsev as an advisor.{Serge's post}
