Witherspoon-page is a genuine borderline classic.Tim had too much trouble with this kind of opponent to be considered one of the greats even at heavyweight.if he had fought Bowe it would be close just like tubbs or page.

    :good

Spoon was a 'merely pretty good' heavyweight in a 'merely pretty good' era.

Bowe won but Golota destroyed his legacy.

Golota was a talented fighter he was just a mental case. Actually Bowe destroyed him because although Bowe was shot to pieces he exposed Golota's weak mind.

Top 25 might be pushing it a little.. But I think an honest person would be hard pressed to find more than 30 heavyweights who could legitimately be ranked higher than Tim Witherspoon. A lot of his wins are underrated and even forgotten. Carl Williams and Jose Ribalta were still ranked contenders when he beat them both in 1990-1991, and to show you how low profile those bouts were, I watched one of them on the Spanish channel !!! I also saw his bout with Bigfoot Martin on USA Tuesday night fights and couldn't understand what Martin did to get that upset decision. The Mercer fight was a robbery too. And there are many here who still can't accept the idea that the Smith rematch was a dive. Even in old age, Tim witherspoon was a force to be reckoned with.. I remember in 1995 at the age of about 38, he took Jorge Gonzalez apart..

After watching both of those fights a few times each, I can't credit Bowe with "wins" in either bout... I can only credit him with the fact that there is no official loss either.. But Andrew battered him mercilessly for the combined rounds in those matches to the extent where I thought Bowe was going to die in there.. The decision to DQ Golata was legit and for that Bowe's record was saved.. But in no way did Big Daddy "win" those fights.

Shot to pieces? Right after his TKO victory over Holyfield?

So he had a couple of wars with Holy, a smaller fighter who wasn't exactly a big puncher. That made him shot? Nah. How convenient for him to be shot after beating his best opponent again.

spoon is borderline i would vote no for spoon. Quarry no.

i think if u win linear title u have strong case to get in except if u are Spinks, Douglas, Briggs

According to Ring Magazine he was also the most popular fighter in the world 1968 to 1971.

He was also the a No. 1 ranked heavyweight contender.

If you would have asked the average man in the late 60s/early 70s to name 3 heavy boxers, 90% would have said Frazier, Ali and Quarry.
