In Patterson's autobiography "Victory Over Myself", he complains about the verdict (very uncharacteristic for Floyd) mentions Maxim landing that "dinky little jab" of his and holding. Maybe, in a sense, Floyd was concedeing that Maxim did indeed give him some difficulties.

Patterson fought the defensively intelligent Maxim well, but the 8 round decision verdict was granted unanimously to Maxim, 4-3-1, 5-3, and 7-1. A substantial portion of the crowd booed the decision. Patterson felt he had won, and almost all of the ringside reporters agreed. In truth, the bout was a close one, with Patterson landing the flashier, harder combinations, but Maxim doing the more consistent work, calmly throwing jabs and following with the right uppercut or the straight right, followed by tying up or moving a bit. It was the wily veteran against the young talented up and comer, each showing their stuff.

Never seen the full version but I'm well away of the controversial nature.

Generally speaking if a fight i can't watch myself is controversial enough I'll just consider it to have been a draw, that's what i do in this case.

I remember seeing it on ESPN Classic too, but they only showed 5 or 6 rounds IIRC. Even then, I still thought Patterson did enough in those rounds to at least get a draw. I felt his pressure and harder punching were enough to carry most of the rounds that I saw.

IIRC, Tommy Loughran was one of the commentators and he thought Maxim won the fight.

The real question should be, 'Why in the heck did they put a kid with only 13 pro bouts in there with a guy with over 100?' Plus they spotted Maxim 9 pounds. Patterson did well, true, but in its inception, I think the fight was premature.

The answer seems to lie with Cus, who wanted to draw Garden fighters elsewhere as a part of his masterplan to be a major force without giving an inch to the people who ran things.

This could be because there was perhaps, in Tommy's mind a certain kinship between his style of fighting and Maxim's.

**** what I said a few years ago.

I've still never seen the full footage therefore I won't over rule a decision.

As a Patterson fan, would have liked to have seen a Floyd nod (only saw 5-6 rounds) Maybe the wily vet did enough to cop a close one, especially based on John's and others take on the bout tho the one judge's 7-1 is totally ludicrous. Plus it didn't seem to bother Patterson, he was back in the ring 3 weeks later kicking tail.
One question I've always had is why Maxim, a world champion and still very viable at that stage, would take a paltry 8 rounder at that stage of his career? Any insight would be welcomed.

I think it was that because of his age, Patterson could not be matched in a fight scheduled for more than 8 rounds.

    Not certain, though.

If he hasn't seen the full fight,[neither have I,] it seems a reasonable position to take. What's your problem?:huh
Klompton may have seen the entire fight but I doubt most have.
