Why should we be glad Cotto is willing to fight at middleweight when he can fight at junior middleweight without making a mockery of the middleweight title? Makes no gdamn sense.
what a load of ****. No one would say a word if he was fighting at middleweight. Draining middleweights to 157 to defend a belt is nothing to be proud of.
I'm still hoping He move down ant take a few more wins and call of Hi ending carrer. But knowing Cotto He will fight at that weight and then move to Canelo and if He manage to beat Canelo He will either retire or fight GGG even if His chances are very slim.
Once again, I get the fact that we online fans are so concerned over the middleweight tittle.... I am no fan of it either, but honestly, there is no pleasing the hardcore fan. Cotto didn't invent them, Cotto isn't the first one to do it, and Cotto didn't force Geale to do it.... Mayweather has done it, The Great Mexican Great Chavez did it, Oscar Delahoya, Trinidad, Roy Jones, Sugar Man.... the list goes on and on. Catchweight fights in history, just a few.... Cotto vs. Pacquiao = Cotto had to go down to 145 Mayweather vs. Canelo = Canelo had to go down to 152 Bernard Hopkins vs Oscar De La hoya (158 catchweight) Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Juan Manuel Marquez (144 catchweight, Mayweather came in overwheight at 146) Julio Cesar Chavez vs Pernell Whitaker (145 catch-weight for W.W title) Jimmy McLarnin vs Pancho Villa (114 catchweight but McLarnin came in overweight at 122) Joe Gans vs Joe Walcott (138 pound catchweight) Henry Maske vs Virgin Hill (190 catchweight) Roy Jones Jr. vs Felix Trinidad (170 catchweight) Terry Norris vs Meldrick Taylor (150 1/2 catchweight) Sugar Ray Leonard vs Donny Lalonde (168 catchweight) At the end of the day, we got to see great fights, because of catchweight. In reality if we had same day weigh in, then we wouldn't need catchweight. But fighters who do not belong in a division drain themselves to get there, and then baloon up. Cotto isn't draining middleweights, neither is any fighter that uses catchweights. They are usually draining super middleweights who already drain themselves to make middleweight. Same day weigh in, would be great! That is also what is so special about Mayweather and Pacman, they are true welterweights, they walk at the weight they fight at and mostly fight middleweights who shrink down to welterweight in a sauna a week before the fight. Those are facts!
(no) thanks for the history lesson, but you still haven't explained why we should be glad Cotto is draining full size MWs down when he could be fighting at JMW where he belongs without draining anyone. Who even asked for Cotto-Geale? not one boxing fan. So why are we glad again? I like Cotto as much as the next fan, but all this is just stupid.
I also agree that it is ignorant as well, but I am going to enjoy this weekend and watch the fight. Large majority are upset at Cotto because of the Tripple GGG situation and are going off on this because of it. We are getting Canelo next, so I am hoping Cotto wins... but don't get me wrong, I do not like catchweights either, I wish we had same day weigh ins. peace :good
you fail to understand is they don't care about the title they just wanted GGG to have it, all the guys talking **** about the middleweight titles are just GGG fans because if another lineal title is foght st a catchweight you will not see them trash talking to much. Cotto needs to move down in weight and let GGG fight the best in that division and try to get it. GGG fans wanted to hard that GGG was the one giving that trashing Cotto gave to Maravilla I'm sure they will be all ok because is Their God beating the shot one, not the midget.
draining middle weights??? U making it sounds like hes been fighting at MW for 5 years!!!! martinez was not drained at all, so dont start with that. and if geale didnt think he can make it then dont fight, **** is that simple. draining middle weights
I originally called this a cherry pick gone wrong. I must change my assessment. The match is now a grave robbing gone wrong.
Catchweights came about as a means to make fights between fighters of different weight divisions. Whatever we fans presume Cottos natural weight to be, he decided to capture MW titles and is defending a MW belt thus he is a de facto MW. Catchweights were not intended to enable "A-sides" to gain a cheap advantage against those in their own division. That development, though it does have some historical precedence, is much more common in the modern era. If Cotto is as good as you seem to think he is, he should have won the fight anyway right? You even seem to think he is competitive with GGG. Therefore, you have no business defending Cottoweight fights - because if that is the case, he has simply brought this criticism upon himself for an advantage he doesnt even need. And after Martinez, and the Canelo duck.. lets face it, he needed an untainted win to maintain his image as a top shelf fighter. Any derision coming his way, has been brought upon himself. Hopefully he gets KOed.
atschRoach's recent quotes are disgraceful; "It was a calculated weight [that Miguel made]. It was what we expected. Miguel will work very hard to the body of Geale. Miguel will knock Geale out. Miguel will climb to 166-pounds. He had a fabulous preparation. Geale showed that it cost a lot to make the agreed upon weight," Roach told El Vocero. "He won't be able to get away from Miguel's attack which is going to begin from the first round. This is a very important for fight for us. There are many things out there waiting for us. You will see what I said about Miguel. He's in the best [shape of his career] and he will knock out Geale."
Actually I dont dislike or blame Roach. At least he is being honest about the strat, and Roach is not a "fan" here - he is paid to do a job. I dont even dislike Cotto per se -Cotto is looking out for Cotto -, the recipients of blame should be the TV networks and sanctioning bodies , and to a degree fans that enable this type of behavior.
