Ah. I just answered my own question with a quick Google.

Bitch move, no doubt - but we're talking about 3lbs. Geale is usually a pound or two under the limit anyway, isn't he? Not really a big deal, or a big difference maker.

I wouldn't compare it to Ward vs. Dawson, for instance. That's a guy seven pounds south of where he was comfortable for several years. Here we're talking what - a one, two pound variance from what Geale usually weighs in?

...and, it was agreed upon early in the negotiations and Geale had as much time as could be asked for to make that weight, just a pound or so off from his usual?

Meh.

Not something to detract from the victory over, IMO.

 

Cotto looked great, him vs Canelo will be a great fight

 

Tainted win but nobody can say Miguel didn't look impressive, we'll have to gauge how detrimental it was for Geale to cut those extra pounds. He was clearly nowhere near Maravilla's handicapped condition, I guess you offset Cotto's smaller frame against the limit he imposed on Geale so it's not really a viable plaudit you can give him.

 

You knew it was at 157 back when it was signed. You picked Geale to win. You were very wrong.

 

More than Roach, matchmaking and catch weights have helped Cotto look so dominant.

 

Geale didn't weigh 182. 174-175 more likely. Street clothes can weigh quite a bit.

And despite whatever Cotto says, he was weighing in unofficially at 159 way back in his days at 140. He was 169 at the 30-day weigh in. He's ALWAYS been a middleweight.

Also been a bit preoccupied, but even under normal circumstances I don't know that drama around the build-up to Cotto vs. Geale would ever have piqued my interest much.

I don't care about the drama. I care what happens inside the ring. What just happened inside the ring is Cotto destroyed Geale - and to my eyes it didn't seem to be a horribly drained Geale. It was a Geale that was overwhelmed like a deer in the headlights, same as he was against Golovkin.

I don't think you can really call a one pound variance from Geale's usual weight a major factor here, and speaking as someone that was barely aware of any weight issues heading in, this just didn't have the look of a drained fighter getting beaten up. It was a fighter getting beaten up.

 

God he was sensational tonight

 

The reason I don't harp to much about catchweight is both party agreed to it. If you can't make the weight or you think it will affect your performance then don't sign. If you sign then make the catchweight and don't use it as an excuse.

It was a good finish and it was a good win but the catchweight does take the shine off it for me.

 

Cotto looked great. He was solid all the way around the board. He was sharp,composed and powerful. Geale was out of his league.

 

Canelo will smoke Cotto. Geale quit. Cotto stands no chance against GGG, and he knows it.
