Was recently thinking of the Ali vs Wepner fight. In the 9th round, when Wepner was credited with knocking down Ali. Wepner, goes to his corner and says to Al Braverman, "Al, go start the car, were going to the bank, were going to be millionaires". Al Braverman, yelled to Wepner, "You better turnaround, he's getting up and he looks ****ed off". It made me chuckle.

The characters and personalities involved in the fight game, is one of the big reasons it continues to be among my favorite sports. These people always seemed more human, then a lot of the manufactured personalities involved in other sports or entertainment. Thought it would be fun to have other posters list any quotes that may have made them laugh, over a fighter or boxing match.

There was a punch that landed 30 seconds ago and he just decided to go down now.

I laughed when Larry said that.

That whole fight was a joke. Mateen went down again later and started giving out to Toneys wife.

    And Foreman at the DQ.

The best thing I seen in Baxing

Everything Cobb ever said was gold. He should have been a comedian instead of a boxer.

Versus Larry Holmes, the action was stopped so the ref could check on Cobb. He asked him, "Do you see me?" Cobb replies, "Yeah. You're white. It's the black guy I'm worried about."

Mills Lane stopped the action to ask Cobb if he was okay in a fight in Reno. When Cobb replied that he was, Lane asked him, "Do you know where you are?" Cobb replied, "I am in Reno, getting the **** kicked out of me."

    On a rematch with Holmes:
'I don't think his hands could take the punishment.'

On Cosell's retirement during the fight:
'I can do my sport no greater service than this.'

    Alternatively:
(When informed that Howard Cosell quit boxing after his fight with Larry Holmes) "My gift to boxing."

On being floored for the first time in his life:
'Nah, it didn't affect me. I just got up and carried on with my gameplan; stumbling forward, getting hit in the face.'

'Don King is one of the great humanitarians of our time. He has risen above that great term prejudice. He has screwed everybody he has ever been around. Hog, dog or frog, it don’t matter to Don. If you got a quarter, he wants the first twenty-six cents.'

“It’s one thing to call me white and slow. But to call me a fat, cowardly, cocaine-snorting, fight fixing cheat? Who are they calling fat?”

Another Cobb classic; when told that Tony Tubbs was nicknamed TNT because he had a short fuse he replied "I seen him in the shower, he ain't got no short fuse!!"

Anyone on here remember the quote where Cobb was at a press conference with (I think) Holmes, Weaver, Dokes, Tubbs, Witherspoon & Snipes where Snipes took offence?

Not sure the mods will allow that one to be repeated on here...

Yeah...it's a guilty pleasure...you know that it's wrong but it's technically very funny and clever.

As far as I am aware only Snipes took genuine offence, I believe (although do stand to be corrected) the other attendees at the presser didn't take offence; although they were entitled to.

Somebody who fought Louis said "he put me in a transom", probably meaning "trance" I guess. Another Louis ko victim was asked by the ref if he was alright after getting decked, and he said something about "going for a walk on the balcony and getting some fresh air" or something.
Rocky Graziano said he liked it when he fought in Chicago, that the people there "trut me good".

I think it was Sugar Ray Robinson who touched gloves with an opponent at the beginning of round 14 to which the opponent said "its not the end of the fight yet?" to which Robinson replied "it is for you".
