Tyson after the 2nd Holyfield fight, he was clearly trying to get out of the fight so he wouldn't have to suffer another humiliating KO LOSS:deal, so he bites the guy and has a temper tantrum in the ring, and blames everyone else because he can't fight like he used too:-(

One of the many reasons I couldn't stand Tyson the guy was an *******, and a dumb one at that..

 

ALL of them. Read "In This Corner" by Peter Heller. A 300 page excuse-fest.

 

IMO the 'new' George didn't want the spotlight and has praised Ali for decades now. Given his new found demeanor, that doesn't surprise me. IMO Ali was the greatest HW of all time but the loose ropes, drugs, etc...can't be totally dismissed. Plus (as I've said) the fight should have taken place in the Astrodome as George was the champ but, of course, Ali held all the cards, locations, and public's support.
In retrospect Ali played us ALL for fools during his 2nd reign. Only his supurb talent and total support from the media shadowed what was slowly developing into a broken man.

 

You've got a good point. Losing boxers, or boxers who had a tougher than expected fight (see Larry Holmes v. Witherspoon) habitually come up with lame excuses for their performances. What may be sadder, is I've seen many posts on here where posters use the boxers' quote (excuse) as "Evidence" of why the poor performance occurred.

 

Lewis after the Vitali fight gets the award for the worst winner. He would simply not say one good thing about Vitali despite it being a good fight and Larry Merchant and he got into a bit of heated argument during the post fight interview.

 

I'm pretty sure Tyson won that fight.

 

Scott LeDoux after losing the decision to Johnny Boudreaux. He was totally justified though. Plus, as an added bonus, Howard Cosell's toupee got knocked off in the melee.

 

He did it was after Clifford Ettienne.

I like boxing, I just hate sore losers, and clowns who make excuses after a loss, praise your opponent who was obviously better than you on that night, try to get a rematch, or just move on..

Do you see the team that loses the World series, making excuses, or throwing a temper tantrum because they lost to a better team. Hell ****ing no..

 

Yup. Just didn't like the book.

 

That's why the baseball version of "In This Corner", called "The Glory of their Times"(and the book that inspired Heller to write his), was so much better and insightful. Stories and insights, not excuses and justifications.

 

Why should it have taken place in the Astrodome?

George had fought 40 fights by the time he met Ali. I think five of those fights had been in Houston, all in his first year as a pro.

He had fought in New York more often than he had fought in Houston.

After winning the title, when George held all the cards, he defended the championship in Tokyo and in Venezuela. If fighting in the Astrodome was a priority, why didn't he make it happen when he held those cards?

From Halloween in 1972 through New Year's Day in 1976, Foreman did not even fight on American soil, much less in Texas or Houston. Was Ali behind this?

In fact, George had 81 total career fights ... exactly zero of them in the Astrodome.

How is Zaire like a hometown fight for Ali? It's a neutral site. It was fought there because Don King conned a dictator into putting up huge money for the fight as a PR move.

Many fighters say dumb things or let their emotions get better of them immediately after a fight. I take most of it with a grain of salt.
Another common occurrence with fighters is whenever they are asked to name their best opponent or hardest fight they almost universally choose someone they defeated. Never naming a fighter that bested them.

 

, They could have fought on the moon, and Ali still would have kicked his ass, George didn't deal to well against smaller, quicker crafty boxers, Hell Young tapped him so bad he quit for 10 years..

Even a shorter, smaller Morrison out boxed, and outfought George winning comfortably in 93..

And yes, George was 44, but at 44 he was just as powerful at 25, and the older also Foreman had more stamina, than the young Foreman..
