Mayweather fought a lot differently at that weight class than he currently does.

I've always been a big fan of Alexis. he was easily one of the classiest fighters in the history of the sport. But a polished version of Mayweather, at the tail end of his SFW reign, I believe would dominate Alexis.

He's way too quick and elusive for Arguello. I also think the difference in handspeed would be way too much. I'd expect a clear UD- something like 8-4 or 9-3.

I've heard Floyd mention on several occasions this is one of his dream fights. The other 2 I can remember were against Chavez Sr and Duran. I think those 2 guys would provide a much tougher fight for FLoyd based on their aggressive styles.

On that last point, I don't really know. It's long been said that it takes volume and/or *****-out aggression to beat Mayweather but nobody has ever really proven it to be true, or strengthened the case that it might be.

I wonder if maybe facing another technically skilled boxer-puncher might have more truthfully been a prime Mayweather's poison.

We can't really go by the actual Mayweather vs. Marquez of reality, but imagine that match-up without them being at different stages of their careers & weight management, without Marquez being all bulked and bloated... I suspect that Marquez in spite of the massive speed disadvantage (something he also faced w/ Pacquiao) could have given him a tough assignment, which Argüello could as well even without using the "blueprint" that most people just assume is the one to beat PBF...

 

Similar in that all three are indeed aggressive counter-punchers, but from there it gets a lot more nuanced and they each go about their craft in a completely different manner..

 

I wouldn't say Alexis fights like those guys. He's a technical boxer at his core with excellent punching power. A boxer-puncher is probably the best way to categorize him as a fighter.

And I shouldn't refer to Duran as an aggressive fighter because he was so much more than that. At his core, he was an excellent boxer as well.

That sounds fair to me.

I always looked at Duran and Arguello as boxer-punchers. I don't categorize Chavez Sr like either man because IMO he's not as technically sound as them from a pure boxing standpoint.

 

JC had underrated boxing skills but yeah he is totally unlike Argüello or Duran.

They just all did very different things, while all being more offensive than a Mayweather but also with some refinement and forethought in what try did .
