When you have what is arguably the greatest jab your division has ever seen, it kinda does mean just that. Ali landed tons of punches on Frazier in all three fights and his offense was set up by the jab. Even when it doesn't land it sets up the following punches which do. Actually, Frazier is at the top. He has the single greatest win and deepest quality wins of the three.
All Joe had was the hook. That's it. You cannot rate a one armed Frazier over two fisted ATG as Marciano and Dempsey. Well you can but every historian of note would laugh at you.
Frazier had speed, pace, footwork and balance over Marciano. And the 20 or so pounds and 5 inches of reach didn't hurt. Over Dempsey, the proof is in the pudding. Frazier beat a far, far better collection of fighters.
Frazier got beat several times and Marciano didn't. I know that doesn't tell the whole story, but it tells a lot.
Only one of the big guys. Lewis at his best would give prime Ali tons of problems. But not Rocky. He'd get cut up and out skilled.
I've agonized over this one. I believe that this scenario represents the Rock's best shot at beating Ali. Ali struggled with Chuvalo's pressure and Frazier's swarming style. I think Marciano's a bigger threat to Ali than both. I also believe that Ali might be likely to overlook Marciano as Walcott did. Ali seemed surprised by an old, retired Marciano's elusiveness and power when they sparred for the Superfight. If Ali comes in taking Rocky lightly, as he did with Chuvalo, he may be in for a long night. Body work by Rocky will be important here.

Dundee said he [Dundee] was the only thing that stopped him. If he hadn't ran his mouth about it, he would have been granted...
Dempsey was a far more skilled fighter than Frazier. Not close. Frazier had Just one arm to fight with and he could not put punches together effectively since he had no right hand. (Uncoordinated). I always loved Frazier but he faced an Ali only 6 months shy from a 3-4 year layoff. After 5-6 rounds ali could no longer move so he spent his time on the ropes. Ali was in no condition to go 15 rounds in 1971. Prime Dempsey or Marciano with their two handed firepower would definitely beat that Ali. Prime Ali possibly a different story.
Every bit of it is true. I asked you what was negative about Ali saying he didn't know if he could have beat Marciano. He did say it. I can provide a link to the interview. I think you have an aversion to the truth. Hearing it makes you break out in a rash. Some people are that way.
Ali rekindled boxing. As did Marciano. As did Louis. As did Dempsey. Ali did scream at Dundee to this gloves off. Here he was minutes away from winning the hwt championship and he was being cheated out of it by blinding him. Dundee never stated Ali was not being blinded by something. He thought it was liniment. Ali PROVED he was as tough, game and unstoppable as any other past hwt champion so to even infer he was a quitter is highly objectionable to say the least.
Ali did say he did not know if he could beat Rocky but he also said Rocky could not knock him out. He also said if they fought several fights"he would win one and I would win one".
Ali stated that he felt Marciano was better than Frazier and Frazier was hell for him. He said he would expect Marciano to be a tough fight and really not sure if he could beat Marciano, Ali felt he could beat anyone but in reality this would be a tough fight. Ali said he sparred with Marciano when he was old and his punches hurt like hell, even little taps......bottom line is when 2 ATG's fight each other prime for prime sometimes we will be surprised but IMO this is a tough battle for Ali to overcome but he possibly may but either way it would be hard. Bonavena, Jones,Frazier, Spinks, H. Cooper were either lighter or shorter or close to Rocky and Ali beat none of them easily....
