Champions that have been Murdered

I think Liston was probably murdered.
I read an "insider's" claim as to why.
Supposedly Liston did not take heroin, but his best friend Joe Louis did. They lived about a mile apart.
Joe was too paranoid to buy it himself, so Liston got it for him from his Vegas mob contacts.
The mob gave it to Liston because they knew it was for Joe.
Liston was hard up for money and started selling part of it and keeping the money.
He got found out and a hit was ordered on him.

I have no idea if this is true or not. It sounds plausible.

I think he just had a stroke while a nonlethal amount of morphine (metabolite of heroin) circulated in his blood.

Duane Thomas.

 

He was in his 60s and he was mugged and beaten. In the newspaper they said his hands were busted up, so he died fighting back.

I believe it was over a $200 debt, if I remember correctly. He sure gave Pryor a scare in the fight they had.

 

Wasn't a member of his own family one of them? A nephew perhaps?

 

Berbick's nephew was one of the killers. I thought I remember reading that an ax was the weapon.

Of course if he hadn't ****d a woman, he wouldn't have been deported to Jamaica, so his actions had far worse consequences for him than he ever could have imagined.

 

Liston's girl (can't recall wife or girlfriend) also said Sonny was deathly afraid of needles and was stubborn about getting medical shots because of it. He wouldn't have willingly shot up heroin. Needles found next to his body....
