It means he'll fight for the vacant belt against the #2 contender.

How would it not be enforced? The mandatory defense is already being enforced. Cotto has a deadline of September for the mandatory defense, and he wants Canelo obviously.

The winner can't relinquish their title after the fight. It'll be in contract that they will have to fight Golovkin. They can relinquish it before their fight, but then the Canelo/Cotto fight isn't no longer for the middleweight title hence is boring.

"Certainly Cotto can fight Canelo if he wants to, but it won't be for the WBC title unless they have an agreement from us," Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler said. "The whole point of the interim championship is that when the regular champion is healthy he's obligated to fight him and the voluntary defense he had this time [vs. Daniel Geale]-that was supposed to be the Canelo fight.

"That was the resolution at the WBC convention. They were supposed to fight May 2 and then we wouldn't have this issue trying to work out the Canelo-Cotto fight."

Golovkin won't settle or quit down about this mandatory defense until he has guarantees. Which he will get if Canelo/Cotto want the fight to happen.

Who's the no.2 contender? I'm sure triple G will take him out and become the MW champ.

Eh... I dont really think Maidana can do better then he did the first time, especially bloating up in weight and being as inactive as he is. So not really interested in that either.

What if vacating isn't an option? What if it's in contract that he must fight Golovkin next if he decides not to vacate before Sept and to go forth right now with Canelo? That's what Golovkin's side is making it sound like.

They can easily relinquish the title and not fight Gennady.

Do you think Sulaiman is going to put a gun to their head and force them to fight Golovkin??? Many champions have done it in the past, and I wouldn't doubt it'll happen in this instance.

The monetary gain from fighting Mayweather is just way too much for either Cotto or Canelo to refuse. The winner will stand to make minimum 25 million vs FLoyd and their PPV numbers should easily crack 2 million buys.

The WBC does not have the power to make him do that. They control their belt and to a degree the fights of their belt holder. If Cotto chooses to vacate the WBC belt to fight Floyd there is nothing the WBC can do to make him fight GGG.

Man Cotto and Canelo are such bums. They would rather think about their wallets than be true champions.

Cotto and Canelo know deep down they ain't beating Floyd, no matter what. I have no respect for those 2.

Well to be fair, I don't think they have much of a chance with triple G either.

So it's essentially get a payday that will easily be twice as much as fighting GGG without getting their brains bashed in.

It's doubtful the WBC would ever dare try to make him do that in the first place. The WBC is probably drooling at the prospect of Floyd facing Cotto or Canelo for the middleweight crown at a catch weight closer to 154.
