The greatest MW since Hopkins, i do feel he could have achieved more earlier in his career, he seemed to be someone who earnt it the hard way and only really got the credit near the end of his career. If he is an ATG at MW, hed probably be lower down on the list.
Good move of him to call it time now. Very nice fighter to watch even though he perhaps was a bit lacking in fundamentals. Thought he won the first Williams fight. The ko in the rematch is of course a classic.
He was also robbed against Cintron and at one time was p4p number 3 behind Floyd and Pacman. Despite being undersized he also took the cherry of highly touted chavez jr and beat Martin Murray.
Arguably, yes and an ATG for me. But it depends what your criteria are anyway. If it's head to head then he'd beat guys like Ketchell, Lamotta, **** Tiger, Benvenuti and Mickey Walker and maybe some of the smaller top MWs like Griffith. He's an inspirational story really the way he managed to overcome being frozen out until his mid 30s, suffering robbery decisions and still coming back to score P4P level wins against Williams and Pavlik. I first saw him in 2003 and he was clearly world class back then. He easily beat 2 of the top British LMWs that year. The Bunema win was a good one as Bunema had just beat Karmazin who was a top LMW. Then suffers the 2 poor decisions against Cintron and Williams. Comes back to win the Undisputed MW title with his first bout at the weight against Pavlik and destroys the most avoided man in boxing in Williams, a dream year. Then completely dominates unbeaten 154lb champ in Dzinderuk who was a very skilled champ in his own right. That for me is a great run. He clearly loses a step after that but showed against Macklin he was a class above the likes of Sturm in the division.
Middle is absurdly deep. Here's a list of guys that don't make my rough fifty currently: Lou Brouillrd, Ceferino Garcia, Al Hostak, Billy Soose, Jimmy Bivins, Young Corbett III, Georges Carpantier, Luis Manuel Rodriguez, Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Rodrigo Valdez, Bobo Olson, Hugo Corro, Hugo Kelly, Eddie McGoorty, Tommy Burns, Jack Sullivan, Young Peter Jackson, Genaday Golovkin, Babe Risko, Dave Shade, Solly Krieger. I wouldn't rank him above all of those guys. Some of them maybe, but not all of them. Krieger beat Al McCoy, Al Hostak, Billy Conn, Izzy Jannazo, Frank Battaglia and 75 other guys and he doesn't make it. Eddie McGoorty beat Mike Gibbons(top ten), Bob Moha, Hugo Kelly and Battling Levinsky. The division is an absurdity. Guys who beat Gibbons and Conn can't get in. Pavlik and Williams? It ain't happening fellas.
Williams credentials at middleweight are far from fantastic. A decision that could have gone either way and a 2nd round knockout loss in the rematch, that's literally it.
I was never really all that impressed with him, at least not in comparison to some of the hype he received, and that he was considered the #3 p4p fighter. That to me just meant the era sucked if he was that high. He wouldn't have been top 3 in his own division in the early 90s, let alone p4p. He was a good, unorthodox fighter who did very well for himself, especially given how he started his career at a late age, but far from a top 20 MW ever in both ability and achievements.
