IMO andre berto is one of boxing's premier darkhorses. It's common now to talk about berto being a "bust" because he went on a three-fight losing streak a couple of years ago. But it would be a HUGE mistake for ANYBODY at 147 to sleep on berto. Berto looked great coming up the ranks....a combination of lightning quick hands, KO power and an aggressive style. he beat contenders cosme rivera and david estrada. Then he won the WBC title and reeled off 5 defenses, including a number of still credible former champs in steve forbes, luis collazo, carlos quintana an juan urango. berto seemed headed for greatness. Then came the earthquake in haiti. Berto seemed to lose focus after that. Ortiz was berto's toughest test. it was a foty candidate. but berto didn't seem all there. he and ortiz took turns dropping each other, but down the stretch berto seemed to run out of gas. his flippant attitude after the fight said a lot. A couple of fights later, berto faced robert guerrero for the vacant title. guerrero thumbed berto in the first round then dropped berto with an illegal hitting and holding tactic. by the time berto hit his groove he was way behind on points. still, he rallied with hooks and uppercuts that snapped guerrero's head back and stopped guerrero in his tracks. guerrero's dirty tactics carried him to a win over berto that night. but berto had lost his two biggest fights. berto also faced a lotta criticism for his lack of development. he seemed to have stagnated as a fighter and, in fact, was showing signs of regressing. by the time he fought soto karrass, what would have been an easy fight a couple of years before, was seen as a toss-up. berto injured his shoulder in the 4th round and fought the next 8 with a severe handicap. still, he want toe to toe with the tough soto karass and even dropped soto karrass late. though he was stopped in the last round, berto had demonstrated inhuman courage and toughness. it was one of the most amazing fights i had ever seen for it's demonstration of a fighter's ability to overcome even with a debilitating injury. so, berto's three losses: to ortiz when berto was distracted by the tragedy going on in his homeland, to guerrero, who used foul tactics to get the upper hand and to soto karrass when berto fought 8 rounds with one good arm. what it says is, berto has never really been beaten at his best. at his best, those three fights all have different outcomes with berto coming out on top. now that, berto has a new lease on his career as seen in his recent destruction of josesito lopez, berto is a legit threat to end up at the top of the heap...at this point, i say berto has the style and experience to beat khan, the speed and power to take kell brook and the chin, power and quickness to KO thurman. after floyd, berto is my top ww ....and the future at 147.
Id like to see him fight Mikhaylenko. A mid rated russian fighter, ranked 30th or so at ww so nothing special. But i think he would make bertoad quit.
kinda like jan zaveck? russians are target practice for a guy like berto...for any top ww actually. that's why there's none from 140-154
Berto is a fast handed, fleet footed guy with limited boxing skill and ring acumen. He has peaked. He's a decent name on a resume, no more or less
I was never a fan of the guy but he has good attributes that set him apart from other fighters and he is deeply experienced in the ring I think Berto is one of those guys who if he puts it all together on one night and doesn't sustain an injury can beat pretty much anyone at welter. His last fight still proved he can be speedy and have lights out power. Even in defeat he dropped Ortiz and at one point seemed only a few shots away from ending it and vs Guerrero he busted up Robert I think he can be a force
that's what i'm saying....and yeah, he had ortiz ready to go after dropping him...then got careless and ran into a hail mary left hook...
