    dempsey

    or
    tyson

now i do see a lot of comparisons in their styles but you clearly can see a vast difference in terms of advanced footwork, technique, defense, power, speed, and ring generalship going tyson's way. i honestly don't think dempsey would be able to take tyson's punches just based on tyson being one of the hardest punchers in history and tyson being more than 30 pounds heavier than dempsey. this fight wouldn't go more than 2 rounds. when you reply make sure you're reasonable and don't bring your rose tinted glasses with you :good

You can debate who would have won head to head, because Tyson was bigger, but Dempsey was much better from a technical standpoint.

    that is the bottom line.

no its not. Jack was not even close to tyson technically. Cus had tyson technical perfection. solid head movement, solid counters. I just have to 100% disagree.

Tyson took what dempsey did and did it much much better.

    Wrong.

He perfected Dempsey's fundamentals, and had faster hands.

He failed to learn a lot though.

He never approached Dempsey in infighting skills, which is why Holyfield beat him twice.

Even his head movement was more predictable.

No he wasn't. He was wide open for right hands his whole career. I can count the numerous times on film he was staggered by right hands by various opponents

Dempseys kept low hands, was a sucker for right hands, got careless when aggressive, his defense turned mediocre when he got inside

Tyson was definitely the better puncher. He knocked out big men WITH skills, a left jab, power....he knocked out the best men of his era. Much more proven against bettrr competition.

Tyson combinations were faster with more power behind them, he had a wider variety of punches, he hit better with both hands, and he was a better finisher.

His defense was his movement, as with Tyson.

By definition he was open at times.

If we look at the number of times that Tyson got hit by right hands.....

I think Tyson was a technical marvel at times, just not a good ring general, he had no plan B. Pretty formidable plan A though.

And prime for prime he runs Dempsey and Tunney out of the ring on the same night. The difference in strength and size is huge.

This is directly contradicted by a quote from Tunney Suzie.

Really? Who had the better jab? The better straight right? The better overhand right? The better uppercut? The better defence? The better guard? The better punch slipper? The answer to all of those questions is Mike Tyson by a distance.

Technically Tyson is arguably the best HW who ever lived.

Dempsey wasn't a technical boxer by any means he was a haymaking brawler

No, he used much more complex techniques than Dempsey used. And took from all manner of other greats to do so.
