How scared would some of these dudes be if they took clinching out of boxing?

When it becomes part of your fighting style and abused to disrupt a fight constantly then yes it does need to be checked... Now im expecting you to tell me John Ruiz was the man atsch

Two different things that are both against the rules, it doesn't make sense to blame the guy being cheated rather than the cheater, that was my point.

Ward would have probably been beaten by every decent fighter he has ever faced.

 

Porter put on a clinic in how to deal with clinching and cutting off the ring when the opponent moves.

He kept working with the free hand and fought his way through some clinches, and in the second half of the fight he found a distance where he could work in close without Broner being able to tie him up as well.

When Broner "ran," he cut off the ring and stayed on top of his man (except for one round where he wasn't as urgent).

Too bad others don't develop these skills to deal with such tactics. It's a shortcoming in many fighters.

 

Blame the ref armchair. You don't fight chump. Boxing won't change the rules for your excitement or **** riding of your favorite fighters who lost to guys because they couldn't prevent or break out of a clinch.

Clinching is about so much more than a fighter trying to regain their senses/catch their breath.

A cerebral fighter going in for a clinch can be doing so just to reposition themselves in the ring and be able to get to spots they're more comfortable at resetting themselves in (i.e. going from the corner pinned on the ropes and clenching to reposition one back to near the center of the ring.)

Also, if a fighter is naturally strong and has good upper and lower body strength, they can utilize clinching to sap an opponents energy. A combination of being a good body puncher and properly clinching while pushing your opposition backwards can tire out the opponent, especially in the later rounds.

So to the TS, clinching is a lot more than just a scared fighter going into desperation mode. For the high boxing IQ fighters, they utilize it to help them gain other advantages outside of just taking a breath. It can easily be seen as a vital element in ring generalship. All the greats utilized clinching for a myriad of reasons.

 

OK man I get your point but I don't think the fighter should be preventing cheating, this is the refs job.

The biggest problem is that this is a grey area in boxing and there's no consistency with the referees. So until some sort is established and fighters start getting penalized for this on a consistent basis we will keep seeing guys like Ward, Broner and Klitchko exploiting this dirty tactic.
