Just prior to his first fight with Ali Jerry Quarry was interviewed in his gym.He spoke of his fight with Frazier and his fights with Patterson.
"Frazier beat me and I learned that I should always fight my fight and not theirs.I went out to prove something to the people and tried to be strong and trade punches with Frazier.

He hurt me.But you know,in the last round, before they stopped it he wasn't punching hard any more.
He'd almost punched himself out.But they stopped it because my right eye was closed.
Frazier was the cleverest dirt fighter I ever met. He had the most talented elbows and head.
But Floyd Patterson was the dirtiest of all.Mr Congenial,he seemed.
But in the ring he was always trying something.
He cut me with a lace and I remember in our second fight that I had him down during a round and clearly after the bell he hit me with a good right hand.
I've suffered 4 cuts two by Patterson, and three knockdowns.
One of these came from Patterson ;but when they showed the film they couldn't detect the punch,I slipped."

Most great fighters are dirty in their own way, so I'm not the least bit surprised by this. The funny thing with Frazier is that he often comes up as an innocent victim of Ali's dirty tactics. I'd say he was abut as innocent as he was in their verbal feuding.

If it is true I wouldn't hold it against Frazier or Patterson. Neither to the best of my knowledge were whinging b******s, so they probably gave as good as they got and simply carried on with it.

How does one set out to, "cut [Quarry] with a lace"? That's not dirty, that's bad luck. And if Quarry slipped and it was counted a knockdown, how is that Patterson's fault? He doesn't do the scoring. Protect yourself at all times or you may have to resort to complaining that, "clearly after the bell he hit me with a good right hand." :crybaby :verysad

Using the laces to cut an opponent was, for a very long time, one of the tricks of the trade and why you see so much tape around the laces today.

Since when was holding a " dirty " tactic? Did Frazier ever whinge about a low blow, an elbow, a head butt, a punch on the break, after the bell etc, etc?

Must be said it seems a little rich. BE, hit the nail on the head and even if Frazier's punching was starting to lighting up (although I'm taking that comment with a little pinch of salt) he went on to deck Ali in the 15th. I'm sure Frazier still had plenty of pop on his punches before the fight was stopped

You ever see Patterson do it in an intentional manner or perhaps witnessed a pattern of laces induced cuts on Patterson's opponents? I'm not sure I ever have.

LOL, I remember Frazier closing in on, I think it was Bugner, who slipped and fell back into the ropes; Joe just backed off and let him get his feet. I doubt he was dirty.

I do not call complaining about frequent or constant holding, like in Al-Frazier 2, whining. It is a very reasonable complaint.
if a fighter cannot get off nearly as well because too much discretionary holding is allowed, let alone things like pulling down on the back of the head, that is totally right to complain about. I would say they SHOULD do so.

Frazier & others worked extremely hard to get title shots.
The outcome should not be tainted by illegal tactics.
Or judges allowing too much greay area legal tactics without warnings & penalties amounts to the same thing.

I just assumed as the thread title mentions dirty fighters, you might have understood I was referring to Joe whinging about being on the wrong end of dirty tactics.

Seems it was too difficult for you. Never mind.

the trick is going undetected and its all part of the science, most ATG's were dirty from Ali to Johnson to Lewis to Vlad and most in between

Patterson dirty?? That's like saying Mother Theresa didn't care for the poor!? Years after his retirement Jerry always mentioned Floyd as his childhood hero. I don't think he ever said that. Next stupid thread!!
