i think we have a lot of guys coming through who will be great Michael Nevin, O'Reiilly ,Irvine, Joe Ward, Willie Donaghue, John Joyce etc they next generation will be top notch
http://www.irish-boxing.com/new-irish-champion-irvine-rio-dreams/ Yeah Irvine has already stated his intentions to move up to 52kg soon. He has qualified already at 49kg for the World Championships so I assume he'll go to the European and World Championships as a light fly if he can manage to stay at the weight. Then he'll move up to 52kg for the seniors at the end of the year and try get to Rio through the qualifiers next year.* Would be interesting to see what would happen if he makes the final in the WC at 49kg (thus achieving the qualifying standard). Would he chance a box-off with Barnes or would he move up and try achieve 'qualification' again *All of this assumes that Myles Casey doesn't qualify for Rio at 52kg in the World Championships should he make it to them.
wouldnt barnes and irvine have to have a box off for who goes to the world championship? your also forgetting about willie o'donaghue at 52kg too, he could have something to say about it next year:good
Id say we will see him do that alright (might even give the euros a miss as he has qualified for the WC already) I think once barnes has the 49 qualification no other irish boxer can be considered,ie no box off and very clever move by Barnes to go the wsb route, The move from l/fly to fly is a tricky one,Barnes tried it for a year and moved back down but it is def worth the risk in olympic year,Irvine is still very young and would be 23 for 2020,Great prospect that
i think irvine is good enough to make it to this olympics at 52kg and has the stuff to even medal there its nice to look towards 2020 but make hay while the sun shines
Great boxers there alright but i can see a few of them falling by the side, some of them don't have the right attitude to go to the top.
which ones in particular dutchie? ward doesnt have the right attitude for a pro anyway thats for sure
I just read there that McComb has a freakish 9 inch height advantage on Selimov. I dont think ive ever seen such a disparity in height before.
mccomb is huge for the weight and selimov is quiet stocky. where did you get the info though? mccomb doesnt have a chance unless he beats selimov to a pulp
Baku Games website. Says Selimov is 5'3 and McComb is 6 foot. http://www.baku2015.com/boxing/even...dex.html?intcmp=sport-hp-schline-calltoaction
i dont know how accurate that is, selimov i suppose is between 53' and 5'5 and id say mccomb is anywhere from 5'9 to 6 foot
Open to correction here but my understanding of the goobledigook spouted by the AIBA is that countries obtain qualification places rather than boxers. Using the Barnes-Irvine example, Barnes obtained Olympic Qualification for an Irish 49kg boxer through the WSB. So, hypothetically, if Irvine comes top two in the World Champs, Ireland obviously can't have two boxers at the weight qualify so the place Irvine has won for Ireland is passed down to the next highest ranked country. It is then up to the individual country who they send (whether they want to do box-offs, first past the post etc.). In the IABA's case I assume they'll be in Irvine's ear for him to move up to 52kg (maybe even for the European Championships so he can have a crack at qualifying through the Worlds) so they can avoid any drama. While hypothetical for Ireland this sort of problem will be big for Russia who already have at least 6 boxers qualified through the WSB/APB. If Russia does not send these already qualified boxers to the Worlds, and if their replacements meet the Olympic qualifying criteria at the Worlds, there'll be afew instances of Russia having two boxers who have completed the criteria for Olympic qualification at the same whether. Anyway, whether countries like Cuba and Russia send their already qualified boxers or replacements, we want them to do as well as possible in the WC's so their quota places are passed down. Additionally, just in general, the more European boxers who qualify from the Worlds and the APB the better as this would significantly thin out the field for the qualifiers next year. I was initially sceptical about the new qualifying system and thought it would be bad for Irish boxers but, with the help of a good showing by Europe at the WCs and APB, I really think we can qualify a record amount for Rio. Barnes, Irvine, Conlan, McComb/DOJ, Walsh/Moylette, Nolan, O'Reilly, Ward all could easily qualify.
ya the field could be really thinned out by then the apb and wsb qualification places also seems to mean more European boxers will qualify on merit rather than 5-6 useless Africans qualifying instead
Dont forget Chris Phelan aswel, he is class act himself, dont know were hes gone missing though. 52kg could have some talent, probably be the strongest weight in the next Seniors with possibly, Phelan, Casey, Donoghue, Irvine and Dalton. I fancy O'Reilly to reach the final aswel, he is boxing great and has really grown into 75kg, the Russian is decent but nothing special.
yup and I think the irish guy that emerges at 52kg could have a lot of success the Russian has tons of expecience id expect o 'reilly to beat him though barring a robbery. id expect him to beat the azeribaijan guy in the final barring a robbery too and lads were forgetting the elephant in the room with regards to Olympics qualification. The European qualifiers are in TURKEY:-(
