To be clear, I'm not talking about APPEARANCES, not who looked toughest, or had the most intimidating aura, I'm talking about who went through the toughest adversity in the ring without quitting?

    Let's give away two prizes:

    1) toughest guy over the span of a career - meaning who has gone through the most hardship without quitting over a whole career

    2) greatest single instance of toughness - it can be a fight, a round, or whatever

    Saad Muhammad, LaMotta

These guys took hellacious punishment at times, and rallied back to win numerous times after taking a lot of punishment.

Hagler was tough, but he didn't take as much punishment in fights like those guys. I would put him up there with best chins, though.

Saad Muhammad was never stopped in his prime.

Of course, the punishment eventually caught up with him.

During a 5 yr period (1976-1981) he fought a who's who of light heavyweight contenders of the period, and often took large doses of punishment in fights, usually rallying back to win. He was never stopped during this time period. He was the epitome of toughness during his prime.

Too many to choose from, but if you put a gun to my head, I would say Battling Nelson.

I think at heavyweight it's still Chuvalo .. I have never seen anyone take the flush shots he was taking from a brutal, young , fresh George Foreman and remain standing .. he had to hit dead on fifteen times in forty five seconds nd was still standing .. very under rated is Marovic who took monster shots from Lennox Lewis in his title losing effort.

Saad Muhammad in his prime was one tough sob, one of my favorites. In his prime you could never count him out. The 2nd fight with Yaqui Lopez was a war, as were many of his fights.
