    2 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze

Absolutely brilliant by the Irish team!

Perhaps gone under the radar a bit, but as McComb, Irvine, and O'Reilly finished in the Top 3 of their weight-classes they have now qualified for the World Championships in Qatar this October. The infinitely difficult World Championships are even more difficult this year as pre-qqualification is required.

Thus Europe is limited to having just 9 boxers at each weight at the Worlds. These 9 are taken from the Top 3 in the Euro Games and the Top 6 from the European Championships in Bulgaria in August (excluding any country that came Top 3 in EG).

So while much less publicised, the European Championships are actually more important for our boxers regarding WC (and potential Olympic) qualification.

Thankfully, in a way, Azerbaijan and Russia dominated at the Euro Games and there were no real shocks regarding the Top 3s.

This means that, with a decent draw, Irish boxers will likely qualify for the Worlds if they make the Last 8 in the European Championships. This does not seem too much of an ask considering 7 of our 9 male boxers reached the last 8 in the European Games which are equivalent in difficulty to the European Championships. The other 2 lost close decisions to the eventual gold medalists.

Hopefully the IABA send a strong team to Sofia, something like:
    49kg - Irvine - qualified for WC
52kg - Casey - Top 6 excluding AZE ITA GER
56kg - Conlan - Top 6 excluding RUS BLR AZE
    60kg - McComb - qualified for WC
64kg - Walsh - Top 6 excluding AZE ITA UKR
69kg - Donnelly - Top 6 excluding AZE RUS GBR
    75kg - O'Reilly - qualified for WC
81kg - Ward - Top 6 excluding AZE ITA RUS
    91kg - O'Neill - Top 6 excluding AZE UKR RUS
+91kg - Gardiner - Top 6 excluding GBR RUS FRA

Saw Donnelly say on twitter that he has been asked to go to Sofia by the IABA. Conlan has said he's going too. Would like if Ward goes too although he fights in APB on July 18th (Then again, Yoka, who won super heavy silver in the EG, had an APB fight at the start of the month).

Hopefully the IABA don't mix the team up so much. Can of worms could be opened if Joyce goes at 60kg, 'qualifies' for WC and has to box-off with McComb.

But there's absolutely no reason why Ireland can't qualify 8-10 boxers for the Worlds

The Irish had great results at EG with a bit of luck might get a few more to Rio before the end of the year.. McComb had a great championships and performed very well against Selimov but Selimov was just that lil bit better on the day... Selimov prob the best amateur in the world at the moment ... O Reillys last round was something else, he pulled it out of the fire.. I had him winning the 2nd and 3rd and losing the first, a lil different than the judges but the same result.. the gap between Katie and the other girls is closing but shes still the standout female boxer at the moment and must have a lot of pressure as shes expected to win Gold at every championship she now enters. I hope she can stay at her peak until Rio shes amazing

I agree i had O Reilly losing the first but the heads up he got seemed to gee him up big time for the second and third,Difference in body language between the way he sat down and stood up after the firstwas amazing, its just a matter of can Katie hold them off but they are gaining very fast, and as you say less than a gold at rio and everyone would be dissapointed,Please god she gets over the line,

Good post my own opinion is the team that was in the euro games should go,apart from the three lads that have qualified already, they should be given a rest and refocus for the worlds,The rest are more than capable of qualifying,Watch Casey as an underdog he ran that aze gold medalist very close,

Our greatest boxer- born and reared in Clones in Co. Monaghan in the Irish Republic! :patsch

I dunno whats worse - you for saying stuff like this or all the other posters overlooking it, leaving me the only one to pull you on it. Once again the Irish never lose their ability to disappoint. Shameful. No wonder the place is the way it is.:dead

Let me get this straight - you hate 'Barry the Brit' cos he was too wise to get sucked into the 'Republican movement' eh? Is that it?
Pitiful. Anyway Barrys had the last laugh, thankfully.

Thankfully the majority of Irish boxing fans appreciate Barry.
You should try to think of Barry as sort of Irish boxing 'Royalty'.
Sort of like Queen Bess - head of our boxing Royal Family!
