Thats Dempsey and Greb sparring at Van Kelton stadium in New York just prior to Greb's third fight with Tommy Gibbons.

Yup, I found it in the Post-Gazette archives and posted it to my page yesterday. It's been doing the rounds. Kinda proud of that one. :smoke

It was filmed?

 

No but a whole bunch of photos were taken of Dempsey's workouts there including two of his sparring with Greb that I know of, this one and another, and a film of him sparring Big Bill Tate there and maybe him sparring Douglas Fairbanks or Al Jolson (both sparred with him playfully there and were photographed with him also). These series of photos is the best shape Ive ever seen Dempsey in.

 

I'll try to see if I can post them. I still have my Greb files but I sold them so they arent really mine to post anymore as the guy who bought them is working on a way to make them available to the public through an online archive. So Ive been busy digitizing everything (just finished 1915's newspaper files which totalled over 1100 pages alone). Im hoping in the process I can find that newspaper article I lost from the day after the Walker fight which mentioned Walker going back to his hotel room and having ice packs applied to his face by his sparring partners. I couldnt write about that in the book because I couldnt cite it. If nothing else I might be able to find links to some of the photos online and post those.

They arent recent discoveries. Just a decision to use the one photo I had of Greb and Dempsey with their hats off (which hadnt been published before) instead as I didnt really think you could tell much from the sparring photos and it wasnt as good quality as the posed photo of them together.

 

Ive been digging these up for a while now. Sorry this took so long. Im still looking for three or four more to post and will when I find them. The Dempsey Greb photos will be posted on a database that is being built by the guy who bought my files. I dont have many details on that other than I have been digitizing and uploading them for him. These were easily snatched off the net so I dont think he would care about them:

These were all taken in July/August 1920 at Dempsey's training camp at Van Kelton Stadium in New York while he was in early preparation for Miske. This is the same camp as the photo above of Greb and Dempsey (although that one is incorrectly listed in the newspaper as being from Benton Harbor. The training ring/area at Benton Harbor looked different. I have several sparring photos from that camp as well but none with Greb in them).

This is Dempsey with Al Jolson at the camp. Several stars visited him there including Douglas Fairbanks, Jolson, and George Walsh. Photos of Dempsey sparring Fairbanks and Walsh are two of the ones I have misplaced that I will post when I find.
