Which boxers do you think overachieved?

    By this I mean boxers who manage to achieve something great for them (winning a fight they had no chance in hell of winning, a great form, winning a title, etc) despite their limitations (physically, mentally, technically) or some setback which should have prevented them in doing so.

    Ricky Burns
    Early losses should have spelled the end for any world title aspirations but he went on to become a two weight world champ and defend both several times thanks to his grit, heart and determination overcoming his shortcomings. Yes his recent fights have been plagued by controversy and losses but it's amazing he got to the stage of being a world champion in the first place.

    Bernard Hopkins
    Hear me out. Walking out of prison, he was told by the warden that he would be back in six months. Then he lost his debut fight. Yet he went on to have two Hall of Fame careers, defy age and become something of a role model to boxers. To go from jail to a shoe in first ballot HOF'er is overachieving to the max.

    Kerry Hope
    He beat Grzegorz Proksa for the EBU (European) middleweight title in their first fight when almost everyone thought he had no way in hell of doing so. He gets my vote :D

    Marcos Maidana
    He was suppose to be fed to Victor Ortiz and yet he didn't get the memo in his native language and derailed the Ortiz hype train. He was suppose to be fed to Broner but decided to instead feed Broner with Argentinian humble pie, revenge hump Broner in the process and stamp "exposed" on Broner's boxing career CV. Was suppose to be "just another opponent" for Mayweather but gave Mayweather hell in the process (as much as a Mayweather opponent can give anyway) and get a rematch. For a "crude slugger" Maidana is not one to conform to standards.

    Andy Lee
    His Lee Smash™ has gotten him out of trouble these past few fights, helping to contend for a world title, win it and retain it. Emanuel Steward said he'd be world champ. Everyone else laughed when Steward was out of earshot and go "really" :roll:. Yeah...Steward got the last laugh on that.

    Jhonny Gonzalez
    Yes he was a world champ before his fight with Mares. Forget it, he was a scraficial lamb brought in to makes Mares bigger. Instead he didn't just take his title, he took his boxing soul as Mares has not been the same since. He derailed, hijacked and blew up the Mares hype train.

    Orlando Salido
    The dirtest player in the boxing game. Salido was meant to be the foundation for the Juan Manuel Lopez vs Yuriorkis Gamboa megafight. Instead, Salido decided that if he wasn't going to get a share of the $$$, neither would and ruined the payday of both men by beating Lopez. Legend has it mentioning his name to Arum makes him froth at the mouth in anger. In a sense he ruined not just Lopez (whose career went downhill, including a rematch loss to Salido) but Gamboa, who has somewhat been in the boxing wilderness since. Salido experienced an Indian summer since the 1st Lopez fight and who knows what the crafty veteran will achieve next.

    Retired after fighting Oscar the biggest fight in history
    Came back then beat paquiao the new biggest fight in history
    It's like he had 2 boxing lifetimes

    Paquiao
    Was just an awful fighter didn't know how to punch 10 year olds looked in better shape then after some steroids abuse became the terminator
    He truly wins an over achievement award because it seems like he to has had 2 boxing life times how old were you when manny won your heart by beating the popular Barrera? How old are you now after being apart of the biggest fight in history lost to a legend but no big deal losing to Mayweather he was made to win? Were you saying on the night he beat Barrera this guys gonna beat Mayweather? No it wasn't a thought because you didn't even think he'd be an all time great we never new that these two guys would run boxing neither man looked special like Roy and Iron Mike

    The over achiever award goes to
    Floyd Mayweather and Manny Paquiao
    Who new they would own boxing and put it in they're back pocket

    Honestly I thought this sport belonged to Mosley
    But he only ran the 135 division so Shane actually under achieved in my mind a bit still great career

    Margarito for sure, almost no amateur backround, very basic fighter with a granite chin, endless gas tank and a ton of heart, achieved more than he should have

    Chris Algieri, The Prov fight made me a life long fan of Chris, bar he doesnt do anything stupid. He was supposed to be sent into to get the hell beaten out of him, but since then Provo has lost some of his luster and glimmer.

    Was supposed to be smoked by Khan, but came forward and brought the fight to Khan all night. Leaving Khan looking like the confused limited fighter we all knew him to be, but though he grew out of.

    People with his upbringing arent supposed to be able to dig deep and drag people into waters they dont wanna be in. I hear you gotta be homeless and in a gang at some point in order to do that. Chris has proved that wrong.

    Algieri hasn't overachieved....his best is yet to come. Especially if he sticks at Welterweight...Borderline 6' 160-162 pounds. Big man and totally dedicated to the sport. His lack of experience is the only thing holding him back.

    His lack of experience is one of the reasons I think he's overachieved.

    But I agree with you, I think worst case senerio he ends up being a gatekeeper, someone to soundly beat to prove you are good.

    well he wasn't supposed to win that fight for sure took a lot of damage to that eye but I can't call him an over achiever off one fight we need a little bit more
