I was so hated by boxing fans after I ko'd a beloved champion in his only ko retiring him. Never a champion, though I was a toughie, who died a hero. Fate is so fickle. Who am I ?...
S, mental telepathy ?. Yes it was Al [bummy] Davis who was a real tough guy from the neighborhood that spawned the infamous Murder Inc. Bummy kod the over the hill Tony Canzoneri in his last fight for the only time Canzy was kod in 175 fights. The crowd booed Davis unfairly for koing their long time idol. Years later Bummy Davis retired, and visited a bar he had just sold. Late at night 4 stickup men came in and held up the place. Davis told them, "give the owner a break , he just bought the place ' and they told him to keep his trap shut, so Bummy flattened the three of them but was hit by a bullet in his neck. The gunman ran out of the bar with the mortally wounded Davis in pursuit, but he collapsed and died a true hero...I saw Bummy fight several times including the night he an 1-8 underdog flattened the great Bob Montgomery in the very first round with his vaunted left-hook...cheers...
Burt, can you give us any details on his first fight with Fritzie Zivic? I know there was pandemonium, but I'd like to hear it from a closer source.
S, I did not see the fight ringside, but what I've heard from people who saw the fight, Fritzie Zivic was thumbing Bummy Davis in his eyes constantly. Fritzie made an art of this tactic all during his career. Davis became furious at the referee and started smashing his fists to Zivic's ******* repeatedly until the referee stopped the fight and disqualified Bummy Davis...Bummy was banned from boxing until he "volunteered" to join the Army, setting up for their second fight which Zivic stopped the poorly conditioned Davis....Bummy when in shape had the best left hook I ever saw from an orthodox position...
