Buster only had one defence and he lost it badly. He wasn't the champ when he beat Tyson, he was the challenger.
Fair enough. If we narrow things down semantically, and limit things to when the man actually held the title, then the Buster who ballooned would probably have lost to Moore too.
Yes, Dempsey was 31 & then 32 for their matches. He was not nearly ancient by any reasonable stadards, & his schedule certainly would not wear him out. Rustiness from inactivity & lack of rigorous training is his own fault.
I think Archie Moore would: Decision Jeffries Beat Hart Beat Burns Beat Willard Evan money w Schmeling Beat Sharkey Beat Baer Beat Braddock Beat Ingo Beat Ellis Possibly defeat the first version of George Foreman Beat L Spinks Beat M Spinks Too much effort to break down the alphabet guys by the 80's ...
I'd make him a favorite to beat :Burns, Hart, Braddock, and L. Spinks. I'd give him a good shot to beat Johnson, Ingo, and M Spinks Moore did not match up well vs heavyweight punchers but there are a few out there his size or smaller I think he could take.
Thank you all for your contributions. I'm feeling ironical today. Archie Moore beats Jack Johnson? Yeah right!:****off
I think Archie beats Michael Spinks as well as Leon. He might beat Schmeling as well as Sharkey and Braddock. Moorer, Briggs and old man Foreman. But these wins won't make Archie an ATG champion even if he could land these fights via time machine. His credentials against at that time top tier heavyweights was enough to give him statistically (and actually) a very strong chance going into the HW champion he did challenge. Archie was also deservedly favorite over Patterson for their title fighg going by form and stats. How many lightheavyweights were betting Favorite in a heavyweight title fight?
I lean towards that position. They would beat him at their best, perhaps even badly, but he would have a chance on an off night.
